Chieko - (OK, she's new to tennis, so the rest of you can skip this!) In answer to your question, I guess the big players started to fade out of doubles toward the end of the 1980s or so... As the game changed and the tour became more demanding, I guess a lot of the top players wanted to save the wear and tear on their bodies, and that part of tennis seems to have changed over into a lot of doubles 'specialists'. I can't really remember, but maybe there used to be some kind of requirement for the top players to be in the doubles too. Maybe someone else can answer that one. But the ATP is pushing for more doubles play, since they're talking about having doubles count as 15% of ranking points in 2009... (TP, do you know anything more about this?)

Since you brought it up... Some of the greatest men's doubles players were John Newcombe and Tony Roche from the mid 1960s through mid '70s, and later in the 1980s, the team of John McEnroe and Peter Fleming were considered the best doubles team, and had something like 57 titles, including four Wimbeldon and three US Open doubles wins.

On the women's side, also in the 1980s Martina Navratilova and Pam Shriver were the greatest female doubles pair, ever. They won 78 titles together, including 20 Majors finals (7 Oz, 5 Wimby, 4 US and 4 FO) In '84 they won the first ever, Grand Slam in women's doubles. They hold the longest match-winning streak in Open Era doubles history, with 109 consecutive matches from April 1983 through July 1985. Take it in -- that's over two years without losing a single match to anyone, anywhere... Now add this: in the '82, '83 and '84 seasons in singles, Martina only lost a total of about SIX matches! That's how dominant SHE was... In 1987 she took the singles, doubles AND mixed doubles titles at the US Open. Overall, she won singles and doubles at the same tournament a record 84 times. Because she competed regularly in S, D and mixed, Navratilova has the winningest record of any player (male or female) in tennis history. Her lifetime win-loss record in singles is 1442-219, with 167 titles; she has 177 doubles titles and 10 in mixed doubles, and a combined 59 Majors titles. Since it's hard to foresee tennis players going back to competing in doubles the way they did in the past, it's safe to say Martina's record as the winningest player in history will probabaly never be broken.

I think it's good that Fed's playing doubles. And maybe it gave him a nice warm-up to adjust to the courts, etc, before his match with Karlovic, especially since he had a bye in the first round. I think he's had enough 'down-time' this year so that it won't have any negative effect.
Remember when ALL the top players used to play in doubles too? You have to wonder how they had the stamina to keep it up, but ultimately, it usually did help their games. Maybe Fed's using it to hone his shotmaking at the net...even though the opposition's tactics are generally to avoid sending the ball his way at all!

I think the doubles is a good idea and agree it should keep him sharp. If he wins in Montreal singles, it's debatable whether he should play Cincinnati at all. After all, what's more important - the points race or retaining his US Open title?
