Roddick wins 2nd title in 3 weeks.

Posted by tennisplanet on March 8, 2008

US tennis player Andy Roddick holds the trophy after defeating Feliciano Lopez of Spain during the men's final of the Emirates Dubai Tennis Championships in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, Saturday, March 8, 2008. Roddick won the match 6-7, 6-4, 6-2.

And is this real? He did not drop his serve the entire tournament? WOW!!!

Either he is getting more control on his placement of the serve, or the competition is losing reflexes. He had 22 freaking aces the entire match compared to 24 from Lopez. So his forehand and his backhand slice did the damage too.

In the end, I think, Roddick’s superior fitness won him the match. He was able to maintain the pressure mainly because he felt good right until the last ball. That may have more to do with the recent rush of adrenaline, stemming from Federer’s troubles, Connors’s sacking etc. than his super shape.

Nevertheless, it’s a great win for him. All the more brilliant since he dispatched the world’s No. 2 and 3 players back to back. It proves once again how much of all this BS is mental. I have been barking and crying about it forever. Now do you cheap freaks believe it or do I have to come down there and esssplain it to you? You don’t want that, trust me!!!

Can any of the top ten players hit that turning point in their career and go on a wild run, just because of that one episode? You bet!!!! Most people find that special gear after a very serious calamity. That’s when they are introduced to their other self, and the rest as they say is history.

You think Blake would have reached the top four rank in the world, if he had not had the slew of problems he had before that? You freaking bet your cheap wallet on it!!!! It’s also a matter of how your mental make up takes to adversity. Some clowns like you all, crumble, whereas lunatics like me flourish. Flourish to me means an extra goat in the trap. So it’s all relative.

Roddick has shown, if anything at all about his make up, is that he does not let adversity affect him too long. In fact, he is able and willing to bounce back with even more vigor. The number of heartbreaking losses he has had in his career could have sent someone like Borg into retirement at age 17.

But he has had similar feeling of euphoria just at the last Davis Cup. That momentum could not spill over to the AO. But here he is with another mini streak to ride on. Roddick has a very limited window left now, if there is even one left. He needs to stop wasting time next month at the clay fest and move over for grass courts, right after he is done with the next two tournaments this month.

He is not experiencing anything new at this point in his career. There comes a period, at about the or close to the tail end of your career, that mentally and physically all you have learnt over the years begins to come together like a magnet. Some call it tennis maturity. The exact timing varies with each individual depending of how many marbles are up there to comprehend and execute the lessons learnt from past years.

Roddick may be on one such journey, and if he uses discretion and is smart about it, he may be able to reverse the imbalance and disappointments in his career with just this short and sweet stint.

With the top two dogs in disarray and the new clowns yet to find their stride, this may be the most fertile ground for Roddick to plant his seed and take home a harvest he has been denied for years.

GO FOR IT!!!!!!!!!!!!

Warmest congratulations Andy! What a lovely boost to him and his fans, well deserved victory.

So sorry Feliciano, not just a pretty face, his ranking way belies his talent. I have always loved his serve/volley tennis, let’s see what he can do at Wimbledon this year, hold the confidence and nerve Feli. Fantastic final by two great players, thanks guys!

Love the pic TP, Feli gazing adoringly at Andy LOL!

PS IMHO, Andy didn’t beat a player ranked 41, he beat a top tenner in terms of ability which makes his victory to me even more impressive. Good luck Andy!!

TP, reading that I could almost feel your pain at having to pay Roddick a compliment.

Give him his moment in the sun. Have the courage of your convictions that you’ll be able to dismiss him again in very soon!!

Way to go Andy! Fun match to watch, too with all the serve and volleys. Now lets see him keep it up (smirk).
I’d only seen Lopez play once before (with my horrible tennis coverage) so was very impressed with his fabulous net skills. Glad Andy won, though!

Jenny, you’re right – Roddick has really grown on me with his on-court toughness and off-court honewty. I never thought it possible, but I’d be half-rooting for him over Fed if the Wimbledon final 2008 between them were played today.

Many congratulations Andy – that naughty TP had you written off after the AO!

Federer being laid low is a bummer for us fans but clearly a great catalyst for you.

TP – above comment was not from the real ‘Aj’ just a joker messing around on my computer.

Congrats to Andy and forget clay, you’re not going to win anything there, straight to London spend a month practicing on grass.

I’m so proud of him! Hopefully he’ll be able to keep it up for the rest of the year!

He will suck in the MAJOR tournaments

Roger is not going to lose every tournament he plays to give Andy the boost ! I still see Roger holding the ship (Dubai title) masking in the face of Andy.
