too bad roddick is out of the FO,..think he could have done better then his done bfore this year,…really hope hewitt is healthy enough to play too,…good to see Coria getting to play here again and of course sad to see Guga for the last time!tennis will miss the dude!,…
Im really excited too see if some new faces can do it big here like,Soderling, who I had high hopes for this season but hasnt lived up to it(losing 2 finals he should have won!),guy has a huge game ,but cant control his temper and emotions,..
Nalbandian, much like Soderling, is even more talented, but been underachieving since he did great in davis cup(except the match were he lost to federer in monte carlo),..I mean what the fuck is it going to take for this guy to do good at a slamm again!?!this goes for Gonzales too!
will be interesting to see what guys like Almagro,Ferrer,Wawrinka,Andreev, kohlschreiber and the elder guard like Moya,Ferrero,Santoro,Safin,Ancic,Canas and Kiefer will create some surprises here,…
I wonder if Tommy Haas, younas el Aunoui and Baghdatis are playing?

I only have one thought and it’s not random.
    ROGER FEDERER!!!!!!!!!!!

  3. Jenny said

    Hi Kristian,

I agree about Roddick, he needs to be fit for Queens/Wimby. Coria was always one of my favs and it will be nice to see him again, I can’t see him recapturing those glory days again though, just have to wait and see. Don’t even mention Nalby, Gonzo and Safin, many of us have been waiting for years, I just sit back these days and see how the cards fall! I root for Ferrer, strangely enough he hasn’t done so well in Paris, so I’m hoping for a decent draw and a little more luck for him this year. I’m not an Almagro fan, but he really does have a great game, sometimes he can choke at crucial points. Don’t forget Verdasco who could do some damage. Agree about Soderling. Moya/Santoro, well they just have to be there, who knows maybe it’s their last year in Paris, love those two. JCF is getting into stride too.

This doesn’t include the top three who I expect to do well. Let’s hope it’s a great tourney and not too many shocks early on.

I do have a little random story though. It’s not about RG. But This is my final attempt to get my message across.

Once there lived a lonely man. He didn’t know what to do with his life. He huffed and puffed and blew but still couldn’t find the meaning of his life. One sunny day ( even though he didn’t know it)(because he lived in a basement didn’t see the light of the day)He sat in front of his computer and finally found something to do for him self and for the rest of the man kind. (No! He is not Jesus) This helped him to stay out of his mother’s wrath for not doing a job. He said “I am involved in the stock market, mother”.
He was there 40 nights and 40 days and there were tsunamis, earthquakes, floods and Brad and Jennifer divorce!!! But he did not know. Mother was worried and she cooked the most aromatic meals, his favorites but he still didn’t come out. Finally mother knew what to do and called the neighbour’s daughter. Just like any typical male at the slightest hint of a female he rose up and came out of his basement. He had a good time but suddenly he was cold.Because he didn’t have his computer to warm him up.( I am making this up while I am going along so looks like this might end up as a book.)
So he ran down stairs to his basement and hugged his computer so hard it got really hot. He checked his site and saw all the complains from his fans for his absence, he was so heart broken and cried. Even though he had so many goats around him He felt like having a Bear hug. But didn’t have any.Next best thing he had was his own computer. So he gave it another squeezy hug and didn’t let go for a while.(He was feeling guilty for leaving his fans)Suddenly he felt some little things jumping in to his lap. What do you know he warmed the computer just enough for it to hatch some babies. Amazingly Every baby had some resemblance of him and his goats ! because this poor computer was watching him and the goats 24/7. He played with them, he watched tennis with them and really enjoying them and the computer got jealous. It didn’t have any time to spend with it’s own children. It yelled at him but he did not pay attention until the basement began to smell. He did not know what to do. Computer said “give’em to me” . But as any male he knew he will come up with an answer. He couldn’t take time off to keep an eye on them because his freaky fans wouldn’t understand and make him feel guilty and he might hug the computer again and hatch more babies. Then He did what he does best. He huffed and puffed so much it took down a three story school in China. He took them in his hand and juggled one by one till they are all up in the air. Then he realised there are identical babies too. He was wondering why they look so strange. For a second he thought it was Stepanek who helped ‘em hatching!!!!(sorry! couldn’t help it)
Finally he thought he should keep all his fans and these little creatures together so he can watch them at the same time. Now that’s how we ended up with these unique, strange looking creatures and some of them are identical!
    THE END.

Very Funny! How do you REALLY feel about TP’s little creatures?

  8. Gracie said

    I’ve missed El Aynaoui…

  9. Kristian said

    hey Jenny!
I totally agree with what youre saying, especially about Almagro,I really dilike his personality ,especially after a semi-final match in Valencia in 2006 against Marat Safin where he won in three sets.
During the match Almagro was fist pumping and cheering himself on,when he won lucky points where the balls would hit the let cord during a rallies and roll over, and not appologising..well Safin got so provoked and mad about it that after the match he didnt shake Almagros hand, and the only thing missing was Marat spitting in his face,…and rightly so,…but his young I guess,..well see

  10. Dee said

    Hi Sarah,
I don’t like them, too creepy!

  11. Gracie said

Does anyone want to speculate about whether the French fans will give Djokovic a bit of a hard time at RG, after the disrespect his family showed to the French/Tsonga fans at the AO?

  12. Sarah said

    Dee:

I think they are cute. Kind of usual but then so is TP – their father.

    Gracie:

I like to think they have forgotten about it. I believe they will give any player a hard time if s/he is playing a French player.

But Novak does bring some of this on himself. He knows the audience probably won’t be for him and that seems too irritate him. He holds his head up higher and start flaring his nostrils. Very arrogant and not the sort of thing to win new fans. IMO.

  13. Jenny said

    Kristian,

I remember the Safin/Almagro match well. I know Marat is feisty, but I’ve never seen him act like that towards an opponent. Nico also sounded like a bad loser in his presser after he lost in this year’s Valencia final, and he’s two years older!!

  14. Brooke said

May the lord be with Sam Querrey. Jeez, what luck! The poor thing can never catch a break!

  15. Gracie said

I just watched a rebroadcast of the 2000 French Open final between Guga Kuerten and Magnus Norman on the Tennis Channel. They were ranked around 2 & 3 at the time. For anyone who doesn’t remember this, it went four sets and Guga was down a break, in the 4th set, but he broke back and held serve for a 5-4 lead. After that, it seemed like Norman had to play about a million balls to hold his serve in both of the next two games, finally eeking out a tiebreak. Then even the tiebreak seemed like a relentless roller coaster. Especially with Guga’s retirement this year, anyone not familiar with his game and with access to the Tennis Channel might consider checking for times this match might run again. I remember vividly, pacing the room and wringing my hands and screaming at the TV, “PLEASE! End this thing!” every time Guga’s chance came around. Kuerten had TEN championship points from the time Norman had served to (finally) hold 5-5, before closing out the match on his 11th try in that tiebreak. Both of them seemed like they couldn’t believe how many times the advantage came and went. Norman didn’t play his best tennis in the earlier part of the match, but that 4th set was a thrill ride, with the crowd chanting Guga’s name… He ended that year with the No 1 ranking, and came back to RG in 2001 to do it again.

Here we go Gracie, try this one. This might equip you with the much needed endurance for the 2 weeks clay court tennis.I haven’t seen those matches unfortunately. I had no clue how he became #1.

With the pullout of Gasquet and ‘Ali’, the only French seed left is Mathieu. In all there were 18 Frenchmen in the main draw (5 WC). Better to have one or two superstars than two dozen average players?

Hey what’s up TP? I hope your basement did not get ‘busted’?!

Hey gang. Has anyone heard anything about Mirka? And I don’t mean it in a gossipy way like is she pregnant. Just strange, the camera does not show her or at least I haven’t noticed. I saw Jose several times.I really haven’t had a chance to watch Rog’s matches and hear commentaries very carefully.

  22. bigfish said

    Hi Sceral,

Saw a photo of Mirka in white rain coat along with Roger’s coach.

  23. Dee said

have you guys watched highlights on Fo official site. Sharapova scream just went through my roof. She was LOOOHUUUUUD.

  24. Dee said

    Hi Sceral,
I saw your post so I googled “Did you see mirka at roland garros”.
    Guess what came up.
    Two posts from Tennis Planet.
    And surprisingly another one,
some one asked the same question last year as well.
May be she doesn’t like clay??????

  25. Jenny said

    Hey Sceral,

I saw her a couple of times this week, but the cameras didn’t show her at all yesterday, even though they showed his box, the only people there were Jose and a couple of guys. Maybe she was Paris shopping!!

  26. Brooke said

Did anyone see the “how do players relax video?” on atptennis.com? Murray said he had friends. Hahaha! That’s a laugh.

  27. Anonymous said

Yes, I thought it strange that I haven’t seen Mirka, Tennis Channel is showing all the matches. Yes, I have seen Jose several times and seems there is no Mirka sitting near him!
Tennis Channel makes me mad, as soon as Federer is playing excellent tennis and has the match all “sewed up”, they switch to another match!!

  28. sceral said

Thanks guys. It’s good to know that she is around. Plus, she is important part of Fed’s team.

LOL Brooke, you can rest easy now!

WOW! Trying to follow the two five-setters played by Hewitt-Ferrer and Gonzalez-Wawrinka simultaneously this morning! A darn good nail-biter between Lleyton and David…I almost thought Hewitt was gonna pull that one off. And a great comeback from Fena – Jenny, you must be thrilled!

  31. aey said

The match with ancic just finish, and i’m so happy

After living out of the believe, that the magic in Roger was there, and the memory of how i was thrilled seeing him play.

Let’s win the RG … Go roger

  32. Anand_101 said

    RG last 16:
    * 5 Frenchies (Benneteau, Monfils, Llodra, Mathieu, Chardy). They must be delirious
    * 4 Spaniards (Ferrer, Almagro, Verdasco, Nadal). Expected actually.
    * 4 Eastern Europeans (Ljubicic, Stepanek, Gulbis, Djokovic). Watch out for them!
    * 1 American (Ginepri) unexpected, 1 S.American (Gonzalez) less than expected and 1 Swiss (Fed) better expect it.

  33. Jenny said

    Hi Everyone,

I’m absolutely knackered! First I had to endure those boring women’s matches for three hours knowing David and Lleyton had taken to the court. So look towards live score, I did predict a dog fight, but not of such proportions. Then Eurosport took us to Fena and Stan in the third set, [still no David] Fena down and I thought here we go, but then…inspiration and great play from Fena! Off we then go to the 5th set with David and Lleyton in a war of attrition, I was hoping the paramedics were on standby, [in the middle of all this we dip into Ivan and Kolya]- what a nightmare. I’m honest, I shed a tear for Ferru and Fena after all that – I thought, I need to lie down and take a quick swig before watching the calming influence of Roger and Mario and indeed it was like bathing in a warm pool in comparison.

Congrats to my fav three and Ljubi. Sorry for their opponents who gave it their all.

  34. Anand_101 said

Have you seen Gulbis in action? I saw a bit and I must say I found him charismatic. A bit like McEnroe was, but not quite the grace of Mac. At 19, he has a good head and looks like he’s going to get to the top 5 in a couple of years.

  35. aey said

    Agree with you anand_101, what’s a Kid,

Also variety of shot making, would like to see how he play with Djokovic.

  36. Claire said

Did anyone see Federer’s match today? What did you think of his performance?? Is anyone worried that he may be slipping again? He had so many unforced errors! Did he win the 2nd set due to the rain??
I’m begging to worry about the match against Gonzales (sp). is anyone else?

  37. gracie said

Claire, very heavy, humid conditions out there, with the added annoyance of a 90 minute rain delay. It seemed like the balls were heavy. Not Roger’s best, but a decent challenge from Benneteau, and enough of a work out to have him ready for Gonzalez. He WILL have to get his serve in order and tighten things up for that match.

How about that win by Safina over Sharapova!?

  38. Dee said

I saw the day8high lights and Gulbis was there. I came here to comment and I can see you guys noticed him as well.I agree, he is Gooood. He looks GOOOOD too. very cute.

  39. Jenny said

I like Gulbis and was also very impressed with Jeremy Chardy even though he took out Nalbandian..

Vamos! Ferrua and Gonzo today, well done guys. I reckon they look gooood too, Dee.

  40. Claire said

    Gracie,

Saw the Sharapova match also! Guess it wasn’t a good day for the 2 seeking their 1st FO. So happy Federer has made it through. Federer was tough in the sence that he won 7-5,7-5; he probably thought there is no way I’m going to a tie break!

  41. Claire said

Was just reading about Ernest Gulbies. Wouldn’that be awesome if Gulbies beats Djoko?? :) ! Djoko is being so arogant (imagine that) about the match tomorrow.

  42. Dee said

    Hey Claire,I hope so too.

  43. Claire said

Just watching the Gulbies/Djoko match. Gulbies is playing great and hope in the future Gulbies takes the “lime lignt” away from Djoko. Gulbies is cute, wealthy and plays a great game! Don’t know much about his personality, but hea anyone would be better than the Djoko.
Justin Gimbelstop mentioned that if the season ended today, Djoko would be the world no. 1. Doesn’t he know how the point system works? Djoko may have won the ATP race for 2008 but far from the world no. 1. I think Gimbelstop likes Djoko, what’s the saying “birds of a feather flock together”! Gimblestop is full of himself, a good friend of Roddick and has alluded in the past to the fact he was “hot” (i.e. girls after him) when he played tennis!

Djoko threw his racket when he lost a POINT and the crowd really got on him – lots of BOOOOOOOOOOO’s. Re-played it a couple of times to relish the moment!

Looks like Nadal will get of the court pretty fast and start celebrating his birthday. He had a great smile on his face when coming out to court, think someone was saying Happy Birthday. :)

  44. Jill said

Happy Birthday to Rafa. And what a present he got with such an easy win over Almagro. Thought that would be a tight match and the Djokovic/Gulbis a bit easier but it turned out to be the other way round.

Certainly not Djokovic’s best performance but still, Gulbis was looking good in many ways and I really look forward to seeing more of him in the future. Not a classic match but quite a lot of fun to be had.

Really looking forward to Federer and Gonzalez tomorrow, just hope Roger can get his serve in gear. Should be interseting. I really expect Ferrer to beat Monfils.

Enjoy your birthday Rfa and can’t wait to see you against Djokovic Friday. Have to say, the way he’s playing I can’t see anyone beating him. Federer and Djokovic might just have a chance if they both play him together! LOL.

Sorry all the Americans are gone. Maybe next year, guys & gals.

  46. Jenny said

Happy Birthday Rafael!! I bet he was tucking into that little cake when he hit the locker room!!

  47. Brooke said

Feliz compliano, Nadal! Make it a good one!

    To all Eurosport/BBC watchers,

Can you BELIEVE it, the FO organisers have put the Roger/Fena, David/Gael matches on AT THE SAME TIME. Exactly what they did today – ridiculous! They should have followed on surely. I want to see both matches.

  49. Dee said

I saw Mirka nice and bright in hot pink on day 9 high lights.(Official web site)

  50. Sarah said

The last two matches Roger has ‘spotted’ his opponent the first set. Roger, CUT IT OUT! Just kidding, Congratulations. Good luck in the semis.

  51. Claire said

McEnroe summed up today’s match perfectly after the 2nd set: “who was that imposter in the 1st set wearing Federer’s cloths. The man is back”! Hopefully that man will stay back for the semi’s and finals!
Federer, don’t do that to us again; the 1st set was a nightmare!

  52. Sarah said

I can’t believe David lost. Well, it looks like it’s going to be Roger vs. Gael in the semis. Go Roger.

  53. Brooke said

Not tennis related, but congrats Barak Obama!

  54. Brooke said

O and congrats to Federer, Monfils, Nadal, and Djokovic as well! Nicely played by all four semifinalists!

  55. Jenny said

Sarah, I’m gutted David lost, I had a feeling about it. Whilst Gael played a great game, the site mentioned fatigue and did you see all the black protective tape, he was patched up like a parcel – did you see it Sarah? Allez Roger. Sorry Fena, he couldn’t keep it up.

  56. Sarah said

    Women’s Single Semis

I didn’t see David vs. Gael. I thought for sure David would win. I agree with TP, David would have been a much better warm-up for Roger. But Gael won; so congrats to him.

I did get to watch a lot of Roger’s match yesterday. Thank you channelsurfing.net. He looked good. I’m feeling good about his chances of finally winning this tournament!

Congrats to Dinara. I’m currently watching Jelena vs. Ana. Come on Jelena!!! The commentators said whoever wins this semifinal will probably be the new number one. Oh Justine, what a mess you made by retiring! Just kidding.

I got this from the MTF… A Roger Story

So i was walking home from the shops and I see someone familiar in a shoe shop right beside my house. I stopped and walked back and realised it was Mirka Vavrinek. I was like ‘Oh wow thats cool , she must be taking some time off while Roger practices’. after stopping home and excitedly telling my roomate I went off to go get milk and I was going to pop in a say good luck to her for tomorro until I see Roger sitting there. I wasnt expecting it so I walkled by and hurried to get my milk. On the way back I looked into the shop and they were still there. Mirka was tryin on shoes with a friend and Roger was sitting there looking pretty bored on his mobile phone. So I pop open the door and I said ‘Good luck tomorrow Roger!’ and he looks up with a big smile and says ‘Thanks’.

It was a pretty minor encounter but I thought i’d mention it because it made my day. Also he is extremely handsome and elegant in person, his smile really was contagious. as for Mirka, ive always thought the slagging on here was a bit harsh but my god, she really is quite big

I think ill be the only person in Paris cheering for him tomorro, I was originally going to say that to him but in hindsight Im glad I didnt

  60. Jill said

Thank you Rafa and Roger. Now I can watch the final knowing that I’ll be happy whatever the outcome.

I’d love Roger to finally win RG and get his 13th Slam but I’d also be pleased for Rafa to equal Borg’s 4 in a row, so roll on Sunday and may the best man win!

And win or lose, I hope all this Federer “slump” stuff will be laid to rest.

  61. aey said

Sarah , love the roger’s story , Thanks for the post.

I would love to see Roger win RG, and always think this may be the time. But saw Rafa play with Djoko yesterdays. along with that 2nd set of Roger with Monfil. I think it’s gonna be very tough for the NO1.

cross my finger with that , and good luck Roger.

  62. Claire said

    Sarah,

What does “MTF” mean?? I remember Federer saying that Mirka is good for him because she gets him away from tennis, i.e. he would watch or play every day. So I bet Federer was there cuz Mirka was distracting him.
I don’t understand why Mirka has let herself get so heavy. Bet she could get her own trainer, chef, etc.,etc.

  63. Claire said

    Sarah,

Telling your story reminded me of a time a friend of mine ran into a famous person. Coleen was at the grocery store standing in line when she realized every one was looking at her. She turned around and there was Barbara Bush ( George Bush seniors mother. Anyway to Coleens dismay, she had her purchase in her hand – tampons and cigarettes!

Oh Roger, my heart is bleeding! But Nadal played like a god, he was just unbeatable. Congrats to Nadal. Wipe the tears, Roger. Now let’s put all this behind and claim Wimbledon the way Nadal claimed RG.

  68. Claire said

I’m so upset that Federer lost so badly; but I don’t think anyone can beat Nadal right now. I bet Federer would have at least 3 FO GS’s if not for Nadal. Don’t they say that about Roddick; if not for Federer, Roddick would have more than one GS.
I believe Federer is still the best player to ever play tennis. How many times did Sampras reach the final of the FO? Did he ever?
I am happy for Nadal, what a wonderful human being he is. How had it must have been to not celebrate more when he won, he respects Federer so much. The announcer’s even said Nadal seemed sadder for Federer than happy for himself.
Asked the question if he felt like no. 1, he said he feels like #2, maybe closer to # 3. He is such a cutie and first time ever I’m not as sad because Nadal is a class act.
I also feel the same as Federer: Federer said, if anyone should become no. 1 he wishes it to be Nadal.

  69. Maureen said

I agree with you completely Claire. Nadal is a class act. Despite his fame and fortune he has remained humble. He is a great role model who has my respect and admiration. I feel blessed to have met him at the Sony Ericsson in Miami in March. I agree with the great Bjorn Borg, this could be the year that Nadal wins Wimbledon. I want to see as much of Nadal as possible even though I am old enough to be his mother. I have been a fan of the sport for years and know quality tennis when I see it.

  70. Jenny said

Totally agree Claire. I felt there was a certain sadness about Rafael too. No falling flat or rolling on the clay. He deserved his win today, congratulations and good luck to you Rafael. So sorry Roger, that energy just wasn’t flowing.

  71. Brooke said

I never seriously thought that Federer would beat Nadal but to go out like that, painful! Even a non-Fed fan like me can realize that. However, in spite of that, I must say….

Great match, Nadal! What a beast! Stay healthy, stay humble.

Now it’s on to Wimbledon. Hopefully Fed can get it together by then- but not TOO together; this is Roddick’s year! : )
