Federer is playing doubles tomorrow with Wawrinka. Is that really required?

Posted by tennisplanet on July 20, 2008

What’s the freaking rationale here? Are you so freaking out of shape and form that you need to bring it upto speed by adding freaking doubles to your schedule? Or is the money too tight these days with just two titles?

Considering where your boat is parked currently, wouldn’t it be better to conserve as much energy as possible to gain on the other clowns at this last stretch of the season? If you are banking on doubles to sharpen your game at this late stage of the season, maybe time after Wimbledon was spent in bed crying rather than on the practice courts.

Maybe it’s OK, if this is just a regular season by your standards. But with the schedule about to get crammed up in a hurry with the Olympics added this year, this is the last item you want to add to spend unnecessary time and energy on.

Add to it the fact that the next tournament starts without a day’s break after Toronto and you are really needing a scheduling manager. Last year the heat was so intense that you almost gave away the match to Baghdatis at Cincinnati. Could not playing as much this year help matters?

Or is it just the classic case of when it rains it pours?

One of these days Nadal’s mom’s head is going to make full circle like that ‘Exorcist’ girl.

Have you noticed her herky jerky neck movements. It’s as if she is a robot. Maybe she is and so is Nadal.

Or is that her attempt to force attention to her expensive hair do?

Whatever freaking it is, it’s so unnatural and creepy. Add her stoney features to it and I think she belongs to the same planet Jankovic, Sam Cassel and Dennis Rodman are from.

The ONE tool Nadal has added in his arsenal against Federer.

Posted by tennisplanet on July 20, 2008

Can you guess before getting freaking spoon fed? Geeeeeeeeeeeeeezzzzzzzzzz!!!!!! I have to do every freaking thing around here!!!!!!!!!!!

Well, it’s his attack on Federer’s forehand. The constant barrage of high top spins to Federer’s backhand and the angles getting acute by the minute has forced Federer to stand so much to his left that the open court to this right has now become romping ground for Nadal.

Of course he had that all along but not to this extent. Additionally, Nadal has gained better control on his forehand directed to Federer’s right. The change of direction required to go there was not what Nadal was comfortable with in years past.

Now he has much better feel of the court. The ridiculously low unforced errors substantiate that emphatically. It’s seems it’s virtually impossible for Nadal to go beyond the lines anymore even when executing off balance shots. The confidence that emanates from that ability, was the main reason Nadal did not get discouraged in that epic five setter since he KNEW he would eventually prevail with the game he had flowing.

This was the first time Nadal directed more balls to Federer’s forehand than he probably did in his entire 18 meetings put together. That had Federer scrambling and stretching to connect his forehand, gradually draining the fuel tank to near empty in the fifth set. Even Nadal’s first serves saw Federer’s forehand, surprising Federer to the extent that he was not ready for them evoking a poor return to start the rally on the wrong foot.

Remember that shot when Federer connected with Nadal’s overhead and the ball went sky high on Nadal’s half and landed in? Nadal still won that point but this time it was with his shot to Federer’s right which was wide open. Federer could not even move. In years past, Nadal would have continued his attack on Fed’s backhand hoping for an error. No more. He can now go for outright winners with this new found ability to laser direct his forehand to Fed’s right.

Add to it the fact that Nadal is now able to generate sharper angles to Fed’s backhand, essentially completely taking Federer off the court. Federer may not have slipped against Nadal over the years. It’s just that Nadal has added even nastier weapons to negate Federer’s killer forehand.

It will be fascinating to see how it all plays out on hard courts. Federer appears headed to the finals here, but Nadal’s journey has many hurdles and if he does get through them the likelihood for him to have ample fuel in the tank to execute this plan appears slim.

But it would be a perfect match to answer many questions for both Federer and Nadal, not just for this season, but for their respective careers, if they have not been answered yet, that is.
