Next tennis generation keeps getting better. Where will it end?

Posted by tennisplanet on September 3, 2008

Will tennis one day compete with NBA? Aren’t those the biggest strongest athletes on the planet? With the speed tennis players are getting taller and bigger, where else can this lead to?

Each generation clearly is heaving a sigh of relief that they were able to get their share of hardware before the next bigger and better one took over. Can you imagine Laver even winning ONE Grand Slam in his entire career with his physical prowess?

How about Connors, McEnroe, Borg and Agassi? They wouldn’t stand a chance. It won’t be too long before Federer will be feeling the same, if he is not sensing it already. I think by year end if not by February next year, no one in the top ten will be under 6′.

Add all the technology and you will be looking at rockets flying across the court. You will need replays in slow motion to just see the freaking ball, similar to the stupidity of ice hockey, where you cannot even see the freaking puck more than half the freaking time.

You think Agassi is glad he got out with what he got before the onslaught began? You bet!!! At a mere 5’10″ he wouldn’t have had a chance no matter how much skill he had. Just the speed, power and wing span needed today to barely survive on the tour is mind boggling.

Why do you think Ferrer and Davydenko are feeling the pain? They are today’s Agassis and McEnroes run over by giants with power and muscle.

Can you see the day when 7’2″ guys will roam the tennis circuit and tie break will be the thing of the past? Hasn’t the trend already started? What do you think these clowns are doing – Karlovic, Isner, Querrey, Cilic, Del Potro?

ONLY way I can agree that Federer’s current woes are due to mono.

Posted by tennisplanet on September 3, 2008

If someone can provide proof that Federer was affected by this disease before the Canas 1 happened, I am willing to give him the benefit of doubt. Or how about after he turned 26? That will work too.

But to my knowledge, there’s just speculation. This year’s Australian Open seems to be the actual beginning linked to contaminated bottles or Wawrinka or both. If that really is the truth, then how do you explain the slide from Aug 8, 2007 to January 2008?

Here are the numbers that clearly point to Federer starting his decline right after he turned 26.

Should tie-break be scrapped all together?

Posted by tennisplanet on September 3, 2008

The two tie breaks at Federer-Andreev and Murray-Del Potro makes you wonder if the better player really won.

There’s always that possibility of match extending beyond 10 hours if you are playing someone like Karlovic, but won’t the player with better conditioning and overall tennis skills eventually come on top? Granted Karlovic’s game doesn’t expend much energy, but sooner or later the better player will win – whether it’s based on physical superiority or better shot making.

Isn’t that a better way to advance than this crapshoot, where loss of just one point can effectively make you lose the whole freaking championship, even if you are a better player overall?

Should Roddick change coaches right before every Slam?

Posted by tennisplanet on September 3, 2008

Connors coming aboard sparked a very similar run he is on currently after selecting P. McEnroe. Maybe the timing of it this time has been much closer to the trigger that peaks his game.

There’s nothing else to explain the pattern clearly obvious.

Change appears to reinvigorate Roddick at least for a few months. Maybe that hyper personality has something to do with it.

Somehow the coaching change, lets him start fresh, unleashing his true potential, until he starts to become too comfortable with it. Beating Federer, Nadal and Djokovic this year is ample evidence. So is the decline since and the upswing now.

Is that only restricted to the coach? Can it work with other people too like someone from New York? How about switching states, from Austin to Florida? Sponsors? Clothes? Turn the whole freaking life upside down. Something will stick. What have you got to lose?

Who on the tour needs ‘how to look presentable’ expert, like yesterday, and who doesn’t?

Posted by tennisplanet on September 3, 2008

Does:

-Sam Querrey: Maybe a surgeon too.

-Bartoli: You to need comb your hair, wash face, brush teeth, change clothes and more.

-Murray: Dentist. If you don’t have a full beard at age 22, you generally try to hide it, like you are doing with other places.

-Federer: Is trying. But goes overboard. Need stabilizing influence.

-Davydenko: Too late. Actually never mind.

-Chakvetadze: Just leave it at that. Don’t push it, you freaks.

-Davenport: Serious blunders there!!!

Doesn’t:

-Sharapova.

-Roddick.

-Blake.

-Djokovic.

-Serena: I think she strike the right balance, without going overboard, too often.

-Chris Evert: For her age, she is doing well, aesthetically, that is.
