In 2008, ESPN.com asked tennis analysts, writers, and former players to build the perfect open era player. ‘Blank’ was the only player mentioned in five categories — defense, footwork, intangibles, fitness and mental toughness — with his mental game and footwork singled-out as the best in open era history.

Quotes from the exho.
Posted by tennisplanet on November 19, 2008
McEnroe after beating Borg 7-6 (13-11):
“I hate to say this but the linesmen did a good job.”
“I’m delighted to have won this match as it was really tough,”
Federer after beating Blake 7-6 (10-7):
“It has been a tough season with lots of traveling and I could just sleep for a month,” he said. “I felt fine during the game, but obviously after a hard season I would need some time off. I’m glad we are at the end of the season and I will take it easy for a few weeks.”
His U.S. Open win pulled him within one title of Pete Sampras’ Grand Slam record, but Federer was undecided on whether he would prefer to win his first French Open crown in 2009 or his sixth Wimbledon.
“That’s a pretty hard question to answer,” Federer said. “I’ll probably have the answer in August.”

What’s the key to longevity on today’s tour?
Posted by tennisplanet on November 19, 2008
Isn’t that one of the goals of Federer – to be able to play at this level at least into his early thirties?
Well, the easiest and surest way to get there is to find someone who has done that and just simply duplicate it to the best of your ability, isn’t it? Sure you will some personality and other traits that will clash with the guinea pig, but there cannot be a more sure-fire shot at it.
Connors is out because of out-dated technology etc. Isn’t Agassi the only choice, as close to what’s on the tour today with rackets, surfaces etc.?
To keep it simple there are just two elements to Agassi’s success so late in his life: Near-perfect fitness and running his younger opponents into the ground by swinging them from side to side. Perfect example of both these attributes was in full display at the 2006 US Open match against Baghdatis, remember?
The match was a five-setter lasting 3:45 minutes. And who do you think started having severe leg cramps from all that running? Baghdatis. And that’s when Agassi was already suffering from a bad back, not to mention 21 aces Baghdatis fired to just 9 from Agassi to allow Baghdatis to win so many free points.
Currently Federer is way off on both counts with a huge rock looming right ahead to wrap the ship heading in.
