Four reasons Nadal will relinquish the No. 1 rank next year.

Posted by tennisplanet on December 20, 2008

1. Over the last three years, his knees have progressively gotten worse. Add the extra weight on his butt, the eight BIG titles this year and the subsequent toll it must have definitely taken on his knees, it’s quite reasonable to conclude that next season will be even shorter than the last three he has played in his life.

Hitherto he has been able to barely survive by the time the US Open arrives. Look for the survival point to shrink back couple of tournaments in 2009.

Translation: Nadal may still produce dominating tennis next year, but that stretch will not be long enough to muster enough points to defend the top rank.

2. Federer is more likely to be out from under the mono cloud at least comparatively from this year, to post more wins and more titles and more significant ones to move him closer to within striking distance of reclaiming his throne.

Look for Dubai, Montreal and Cincinnati to be the big reasons in Federer’s serious assault on the top rank – he was taken out in the opening round at the first two and third round at Cincy.

3. Murray’s emergence may harm Nadal more than it will affect Federer’s chances of getting to the top. Last thing Nadal needs is another strong contender on the hard courts – his least favorite surface.

As if Djokovic was not enough, who almost dethroned Nadal from his No. 2 spot this year, Murray’s addition makes Nadal’s semifinal encounter a guaranteed war – since it will be either Djokovic or Murray, with a prospect of a renewed Federer in the finals.

4. Complacency? Typically when you achieve practically all your career goals in one year, there’s a tendency to exhale providing an opening to the more than hungry wolves already breaking down the door.

It’s imperative for Nadal to win ALL the clay tournaments next year for obvious reasons. If he doesn’t it may have the same affect on him as losing Wimbledon had on Federer. God forbid, if he loses at Roland Garros, that will be equivalent of losing two Wimbledons back to back.
