Thanks for your response. I can see where you’re coming from based on match figures. When Coria was strutting his stuff, many pundits referrred to him in this way, as with Nalbandian and I did agree with them. So, I will modify my comment and say a flawed genius might be more approprate, he was certainly an underachiever. I read an article by Bodo today who suggested marital discord, I don’t know how true that was. Of course he should have won many more titles and that 2004 FO loss at 22yrs old basically finished him off. He did not have the mental fortitude of Nadal, and as you know, he had shoulder surgery, the yips and all manner of injuries. Unfortunately, it’s all in the past now.

Given that Coria played the French Open 7 times
and got past the 4th round EXACTLY TWICE —
why do you consider him a “genius on clay”?

I suspected this might happen, if ever anyone had such rotten luck it was him. He tried so hard to make a comeback, once the Prince of Clay, he had the guts to go back to challengers, and he still got injured. He was never the same after the 2004 French Open loss, which he should have won, so sad.
