Pathetic American coverage of Slams. From Murph. Thanks.

MURPH
A sad note regarding the pathetic American coverage of Grand Slams by Bruce Jenkins, great sports writer for the San Francisco Chronicle:
NBC’s Wimbledon coverage has been bafflingly inadequate. On days with crucial matches running throughout the day and into the evening at the All England Club, NBC checks in for three hours — on tape delay — and then, “Take care, now — gotta go.” Are they kidding? Really, it seems like some sort of practical joke.
Although ESPN has been a reasonably satisfying alternative, the NBC coverage is worth watching for one reason: John McEnroe teamed with Ted Robinson in the broadcast booth. If you’re with me on this, enjoy it while you can, because their longtime partnership will be dissolved, quite against their will, at the upcoming U.S. Open.
The McEnroe-Robinson pairing has been a U.S. Open staple for years on the USA Network, particularly coming to life in those wildly entertaining night matches. As opposed to the confusing NBC-ESPN setup we get at Wimbledon, USA throws a blanket over weekday coverage at the Open, essentially showing everything that matters.
Regrettably, ESPN purchased the U.S. Open rights last year. The network will undoubtedly employ McEnroe, but Robinson will be left out in the cold (and as a valued employee of NBC, he won’t be around when CBS takes over on weekends). I’ll guarantee you McEnroe won’t be happy about working with Chris Fowler, or whoever anchors the ESPN broadcasts, after years in the booth with Robinson.
The Wimbledon coverage, as well as that at the French Open (and past U.S. Opens), is particularly special because McEnroe and Robinson are teamed with Mary Carillo. All three are from the New York area, they’ve known each other for decades, and for my money they’re the best three-person team ever assembled in any sport. It’s not easy working with McEnroe, but these two bring out the best in him.
“Ted was the first guy who ever listened to me when I started doing commentary,” McEnroe said in a conference call the other day. “Most of the guys would be doing their own thing, but he’d actually respond to what I had to say, and that made it all much more fun. I’m a little biased here, but I think we make a great team — Ted, Mary and myself. Mary and I go way back as kids, playing mixed doubles together, so there’s something special, a synergy that will always be there. Ted knows when to let us do our thing. It’s really worked into a beautiful thing.”
That partnership will be renewed next summer, at the French and Wimbledon. The U.S. Open won’t sound quite the same.

I am so disappointed in Wimbledon coverage…the TEnnis Channel advertises itself as “The Home of The Slams”…I say they deserve to have a class action lawsuit brought up against them!

I am lucky enough to have a landlord who pays for direct tv. Direct TV gives six channels devoted to covering the first seven days of each slam. It also gives you a nice channel where you have split screens of all the channels, so you can see what is up on each court. There is also a button on your remote that gives the live scores, seedings, and match schedules.
McEnroe announces on one of the channels. Oh yeah, it’s commerical free except for the ESPN feed.
I read an article, which I could find it, about how NBC’s coverage this past weekend drew the lowest ratings ever. I’m not suprised because the matches were taped. On Sunday, NBC showed Sharapova’s match from earlier in the week. Starting the second week of a slam, I just watch it online.

NBC – tape delay, constantly talking during the points, often going off topic. Mary Carillo is awful – she is the worst announcer in all of tennis. McEnroe and Robinson are good.
ESPN – constantly showing themselves talk instead of the tennis. Why can’t they show tennis instead of the four/five booth view of themselves they show? They do have some really good commentators (Gilbert, Cahill, Shriver, P. McEnroe).
USA – there were generally pretty good, but alas are no more.
DirectTV – they are the best by far, except that the picture quality (even in HD) isn’t as good as the main channel feeds. But it is awesome that they show so many different courts at the same time. And the announcers are great too – they never talk during the points (and hardly talk even between them).
And they all have a high camera angle that they persist in using. I wish they would set the camera about five feet over the head of the person on the near court – then you can judge the speed of the ball as well as see how it dips.

For me it’s the Australian Open, French Open and US Open on Eurosport and Wimbledon on the BBC (cause they have no commercials in between). Furthermore I can watch different matches online on certain websites, it’s pretty great.

I am completely in love with the Eurosport coverage.
Only small kink is that, has i listen to the portuguese coverage, i don’t get Willanders comments in full, but other than that, i love the coverage, specially in the first week of the Grand Slams.
Actually, i just think that Grand Slams are special in the first week. All those games; the constant action going on in all those courts; the young players coming on; the surprise results; it’s just a huge party that gets diluted when we get to the 2nd week and people really focus on just a handfull of games.

I agree that the NBC tape-delayed coverage is a terrible arrangement, but I can’t imagine how anyone can tolerate listening to Mary Carillo and her constant chatter. I don’t care if she’s a friend of McEnroe –
she’s totally annoying!

I agree, Mary Carillo is the worst. She just blathers on and on saying nothing! I wish she NBC or whomever would flush her!

Yes, I agree that the US Open without McEnroe, Robinson and Carillo together will lose some of its luster.
These three have so much insight and seem to work so well with and off each other. Their timing shows that they are so attuned to one another.
But, the name of the game seems to be $$$$$ and things change so rapidly nowadays that no one pays attention to how things really work. It is a sad commentary and doesn’t bode well for the sport of tennis.

I don’t even know why I continue to pay for the Tennis Channel. It is a joke, except I can see the highlites at night of the good matches they never show on NBC.

I found the meaning of NBC: Never Broadcast Current! I’m so sorry for you guys!

it has been so annoying this last week. Our TV takes the ESPN coverage in the morning and shows a match that is live. Then they announce that the next match is on NBC and they aren’t coming on for a while. When NBC come on the match they’re showing is over in real time. I’ve moved almost entirely to watching on the web. In fact I may cancel my cable TV. Bet 365 and adthe.net have had it all, live and with good commentary.( they’re showing the ladies doubles now which NBC has left)

we’re also watching on http://www.fromsport.com/c-4.html. which, I believe is available in the USA and is free

I agree. the coverage is totally ridiculous. I get to watch one or two matches on ESPN if I wake up at 5 (which I have been doing for nearly the whole two weeks except for a few let ups here and there) and then have to switch to NBC (as of the second week) at 12 PM. what!? when ESPN coverage ends at 9 AM during the second week and NBC begins at noon it just makes no sense. I hate NBC.
the only thing I can rely on NBC for is showing the finals, in their entirety, at the correct time – if they don’t do that… oh man. I don’t know what’s coming to them. all obsessive fans must hate them like this.

Mc Enroe did not even SHOW UP for the woman’s final today! The NY Times wrote a column criticizing NBC for its terrible coverage. And, Yes, I signed the petition.

I’m sure Mac was here before the final today with Tracey Austin. Maybe he was working for the BBC?

Well, Americans did well.congratulations!
But the coverage is still very bias in Australia as well. They would start late, and show a bit of Federer or some other good match and right in the middle of it, swap straight in to Sam or Lleyton matches.Fox sport who starts early coverage doesn’t have rights to show Centre court matches. Most of the time we have to wait for replays. I taped women doubles finals because they don’t do replays of women’s doubles. Not happy. Everyone’s frustrating me.
