Thanks TP! This is a great idea.

  2. Jenny said

Brilliant idea, TP. I think we might start worrying about ourselves if we start discussing tennis nuances with our pets and the furniture, a very one sided conversation. Mind you, I have thrown some choice words at some players via my TV, but I can assure you they haven’t answered me back.

  3. Stella said

    Go Federer

  4. Alex said

this thing will be bombarded tomorrow.
hope we can actually reply back and forth

don’t worry, i’ll do my part by taking downers

  5. banti said

    Good idea TP san.

This is beautiful and long due. TP, you are no longer a dinosaur. You have made a great leaps in the last month. We appreciate your sense of our need and taking steps toward meeting them.
    Thank you !

I think that this will be the first GS final I’ve ever watched where I will be thrilled with any result. Two neat guys out there. If Federer wins, it’s history, history, history. If Roddick wins, it’s the underdog who has fought his butt off to get there. Roddick was crying after the semi. I can only imagine what we’ll see if he wins it all.

    • evie said

Totally agree. I’ll be rooting for Federer, but will also be thrilled if Roddick somehow breaks through. The first no-lose final for me, ever!

  12. Dee said

Now you tell me. I ask you about this days before.Nothing!(on ” Got a problem” or something. I can’t even see that box anymore) Now we only have one day. Not happy.

  13. Murph said

Using an old cliche, it’s going to be a shame this match will end with only one winner (but I’m rooting for the Fed).

Just gave my 3-yr paranoid yellow lab 2 tranquilizers who goes ballistic over the sound of 4th of July firecrackers & now wondering if I should take one of his before the GS final begins!!!

    • Jenny said

My Collie would empathise with your Labrador, Murph! Ballistic is an understatement, I have to put him on a leash in the house to stop him damaging himself or having the TV over trying to get behind it on our bonfire night. Collies don’t always react well to tranx so it isn’t a real solution.

      • ricke said

both my goldens are breathing like they have asthma and looking very stressed out. I keep giving them treats to distract them….not working…almost over I hope!

      • Murph said

I don’t know whether to laugh or cry…. our dogs suffer over one thing, while we’re suffering with an elevated blood pressure til the end of the great match! Poor us.

      • chieko said

Oh my Tibetan Spaniel is the same about fireworks. He is 16 lbs and looks like a minature Golden Retriever same coloration and same looks but just smaller and will remain small. Whenever there is fireworks he will shake like a leaf and it is scary to see him shake like that with his tongue hanging out and pace around our house nervously trying to find somewhere to hide. It is interesting to read that bigger dogs in your country do that too. I just hold him and hide and subsequently miss most of the fireworks in our city. Sigh!!

    • Jenny said

We have a week of firework nonsense before the 5th November, so you can imagine, I hate it seeing what some pets goes through. My cat seeks refuge under the bed. My old Labs were rock solid, they would stand in the garden and watch it all going on around them gazing at the rockets and Roman candles, even the thunderous bangers meant nothing to them. Some old fashioned Lab breeders who tend to live in the country blast shotguns, bash saucepans within earshot when tiny puppies in the nest and from around a week old, it gets them used to loud noise so they don’t become gun [firework] shy.

      • Deep South Girl said

I gave my Shar-Pei/ Black lab mix his anti-anxiety medicine—The 4th of July fireworks are shot off a small mountain right over the ZOO!! Poor animals. My little Pomeranian is 14 y.o. so he’s pretty much deaf now.

  14. Adrian said

Hey guys! Just seeing if this works! I’m excited we’ll get to chat while the match is going on! Off to bed!! Talk to you tomorrow morning! I may start watching 30 min later just to be able to skip the commercials! :)

  15. banti said

Hey everyone. checking if this works. It hasnt been instant for me. Wasn’t that the big change that was supposed to happen?

  16. banti said

Sorry testing again. I just read you have to post your email address for it to go through without moderation. Gota check.

  17. bluechyll said

Less than 4 hours to go! :]
    Go Rogeeeer!

  18. defrogerer said

Whilst at a routine check up appointment on Tuesday, my GP informed me my blood pressure was 192/98 and then asked was there anything major happening in my life????? Duh! Worst of it all is he put me on tabs straight away warning me to take them both every day, and take things real easy…..does watching the final count,LOL.

Go Roger, and if today is not to be no.15,I will be so happy for Andy.

  19. Schop said

Wimby live chat is a very very exciting idea TP san!

    I am already very nervous!!!

Could you please post afterwards the absolute figures of visitors before, during and after the match!? “Who is online now” gives only relative numbers in %. Thanks!

    • Bettyjane said

Woke up at 3AM, realizing I was too nervous about the match to go back to sleep! (Thanks Schop and Sergeant for my avatar!)

  20. Raj said

I do feel for Andy but I want Roger to win. Go Roger Go!

  21. Big Fish said

    Good luck Roger!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  22. Jenny said

Enjoy the final everyone! I’ll say Allez Roger for my part, but in any event, may the best man win. Watch that BP, Defrogerer! Mind you, just going to the doctor usually raises BP for most folks.

  23. Sol said

    I’m still waiting for moderation…

Not gonna be able to be here live with you guys :(

I guess I’ll talk to you all later.

    Enjoy.

  24. Sol said

Ok, so no need to tell you to “enjoy” since you won’t read my comment till later on, so basically I’m talking to myself here…

    Not happy TP :(

  25. Gracie said

8:40 on the US east coast. I’m already into my 2nd pot of coffee, already pacing the floors. Waiting for NBC’s morning show drivel to be over, and logged onto an online stream, listening to the band play while people file in to their seats. Now Boris Becker and some other commentator talking, previewing the walk from the locker room.

This will be the first final in a long time where I’ll be rooting for Roger, but won’t absolutely hate it if the other guy comes through. It’s such a blast knowing all you freaks out there around the planet are up and glued to your tv sets, whatever time it is…

  26. Anonymous said

12 minutes to go! I’m a Fed and Rafa fan, never liked Roddick much but now I do – he’s worked so hard this past year, have to appreciate him for that……hope they both play great and give us a fun morning of tennis!

  27. Gracie said

Hey, Pete Sampras DID go! He just walked into the Royal Box. I didn’t think he’d show. I hope he’s not a jinx!

  28. Why is law enforcement officers in all kinds of different outfits on the court?

And is that ball girl as tall as Roddick?

  29. Tennis Freak said

Both are holding fine in the first 5 games.

  30. banti said

Glad Pete made it:) Late entrance:) Roddicks playing very well!

  31. ricke said

Thanks for all the birthday wishes tennis friends! This will be a great day no matter what the out come, I love both players. Nice to see Sampras showed up.

  32. Tennis Freak said

A-Rod hit a couple of good passing shots. 5 aces for Fed already.

  33. Tennis Freak said

How was Fed able to track that volley down, 1st point of the 7th game? Wow !

  34. Tennis Freak said

As always, Fed’s movement is the best, positions himself to make any shot.

  35. ricke said

OMG! NBC just showed a clip of Roger taking his racquet out of the plastic bag: The bag has his RF monogrammed on it! Class all around.

  36. Screwdriver said

somehow fed is not showing the will to break arod. i don’t see anyway arod is going to break fed though

  37. ricke said

I think we are in for a tiebreak!

  38. Roddick losing the first serve advantage? Not only is the percentage dipping but Federer is starting to block most of them unlike the first few games when aces were flowing from Roddick.

  39. Tennis Freak said

New A-Rod. Ad for A-Rod. Deuce. Old Roddick shows up and mishits slice. . 2nd break point for Fed. Good serve, 138 mph. Deuce. Missed backhand. 3rd break point. Long from Fed. Challenge from break. Deuce. Beautiful forehand from Fed. 4th break point. Out. Challenge from Fed. It’s out. Deuce. Lost Forehand. Game point for A-Rod. Game. This is new Roddick.

  40. Screwdriver said

damn..touchwood…arod can break fed easily and fed can never break arod today

  41. AND we have a match!!!! At least four sets if Federer will repeat.

  42. Tennis Freak said

A-Rod gets 1st break/ set point. He takes it. Similar to the Murray match.

  43. YMD said

I’m watching the match, but I’m wondering what Gavin Rossdale has done to earn a seat in the player’s box. He’s not Warwrinka.

  44. Tennis Freak said

I think this is the 1st time Fed got broken and lost a set in this tournament.

  45. Federer’s forehand UE’s more than Roddick’s?

  46. Rope a dope in action?

  47. Tennis Freak said

I like this fan showing a sign that read Andy Murray Roddick.

  48. Bettyjane said

Geez, Even Mirka is looking concerned

  49. What kind of juvenile glasses is Sampras sporting? Bridgette looks so good!!!!!!!

    • YMD said

I don’t like the glasses but Pete has gotten handsome, in his own way.
I used to think he resembled Frankenstein and I marveled at the way he could hide the bolts on the side of his neck.

Wow, that tie breaker was amazing.

  50. YMD said

Not to take anything away from Andy, but Roger seems beyond uptight.

  51. Tennis Freak said

A-Rod gets a mini break. Be careful, Fed.
Now, A-Rod holds both and 4-1 lead i the 2nd set tie breaker.

  52. Schop said

    This is sick! 1:1

  53. Federer seems to have found the answer now: It’s the slice forcing Roddick to dig the ball out.

  54. Gracie said

Will that tiebreak be a turning point?

  55. ricke said

Oh Andy! That was a big time choke! You had it! Props to Roger for staying strong.

  56. YMD said

I’m watching the Wimbl. live score board and then looking at the tv.

  57. Stella said

and I thought Fed was going down without a fight. Well done. Keep it up

  58. Tennis Freak said

How would you lose a set when you have 4 set points?
That was a total mental collapse from A-Rod. Good that the match is back to the beginning now, and the only difference now it is best of three.

  59. Tennis Freak said

    Gracie,
I think so, too. A-Rod had a sort of match point. Fed has turned it around.

  60. evie said

Amazing guts in that TB. I’m still shaking.

And he’s trying net play again. Andy misses this time.

  61. YMD said

I’m sure we all want this match over so we can see what Tp choses as his crotch shot, sex face, solicitaion of oral sex, or self-pleasuring picture of the match.

  62. Tennis Freak said

A-Rod had sort of match point there. Fed has turned it around. A-Rod will regret big time if that tiebreak (4-set point) is to become the turning point of the match later. A-Rod must win this 3rd set to send a message that he is in to win.

Personally, I am looking for a 5th setter final. This set, I am rooting for A-Rod, and next 2, I will be, back to, rooting for Fed.

  63. Like I said, Roddick needs to conserve for his service games / tie breaks or else that rope a dope will take hold sooner than later.

  64. Jenny said

Who said this would be boring! Lovely to see Pete in the Royal box with the other legends, also Mr Laver looking so well. Not really sure, TP, but I think security might be Territorial Army guys? I’ll keep my eyes open.

  65. Jenkins said

Come on Andy stay positive :)

  66. Jenny said

lol Sir Alex Ferguson, Manchester United FC Manager here too!

    • YMD said

Throw in Henry Kissinger,Woody Allen and Russell Crowe. It’s all so weirdly random.

Seriously, Why is Gavin Rossdale in that player’s box?! If fed wins, boyfriend gavin’s reaction will be priceless.

      • Deep South Girl said

Just saw KIssinger. His thin wife is from Birmingham (AL). I heard Interpol was investigating him maybe for something to do with Allende. Anyone? Bueller?

  67. Laver is dissolving so fast he may not last this match. Only one who can match that is that former NBA coach Hubbee Brown?

  68. Schop said

Michael Ballack, German Soccer Player as well present

  69. Who freaking trains these ball kids? The ball comes to the players with all kinds of weird bounces?

  70. Ash said

Federer needs to pull himself together – he is flaking it. Kudos to Roddick though (apart from the 2nd set breaker). Should really be 2 sets to love to Roddick. I wonder who has the record for the most grand slam finals LOST??? Fed’s at 5 and counting…..

  71. Roddick going thru the same BS of not covering his forehand side when moving to the net and ends up getting passed over and over again.

  72. Last set in play? Soak it in – historical moment(s).

  73. Schop said

    David Coulthard, Scot?

  74. Tennis Freak said

A-Rod has already made this final far better than Murray did the USO. If A-Rod takes the 4th, it will make the final even more beautiful. Give me a 5th setter, A-Rod.

  75. Gracie said

Not if Roddick has something to say about it.

  76. Tennis Freak said

A-Rod breaks Fed 2nd time in this match, wow !

  77. Who are the morons moving around other courts? If you are a tennis fan shouldn’t you be watching the match – somewhere?

  78. Ash said

Hope I’m wrong BUT as this looks to be going the distance (Fed fluffing once again and handing Roddick a well deserved break) I don’t fancy Fed’s chances in the 5th. He’ll get broken once again. Right now – it’s Roddicks to lose!

  79. Tennis Freak said

Roddick holds after taking that break and leads 4-1 in the 4th set. He still believes.

  80. What does Federer do when he gets embarrassed losing a point? He holds his nose, like he just did at 30 all on Roddick’s serve.

  81. Ash said

What are the UE counts? This is a key stat.

  82. Gracie said

Ok, time to take the blood pressure mmeds now.
    What a match!

  83. Alex said

    five sets children

  84. Roddick may have already embarrassed Federer by taking him to a fifth set with a very close shave in the second considering tennis royalty is in attendance and Federer was destined to win this in straight sets.

  85. Ash said

Well it’s going the distance. Who would have thought? Fed playing like a rabbit in the headlights and Roddick playing with strength & purpose. Well ‘the greatest ever’ had better dig deep right now. Cannot help feeling that Roddick deserves this more…

  86. Tennis Freak said

That fall must have hurt A-Rod so badly. That almost cost him the set and match. But he serves out fine after 0-30.
Now we have a fifth set final. Thank you, Roddick and Fed.

  87. Federer’s slice deserting him?

    • Ash said

only the slice??? He’s not going to come through this 5th set. Remember last Wimb final plus Oz open final?? Deep deep down he’s not really tough – we all know that. Only Roddick mentally collapsing can help him – what are the chances of that?

  88. Brigdette’s smile is gorgeous!!!!

  89. Noticed Roddick staring at Federer after winning points – to rub it in?

  90. Tennis Freak said

Imagine if A-Rod had won that 2nd set; the match would have been over at the end of the 4th.

Here we are. After 3+ hrs, A-Rod has not been broken yet.

I still somehow think that Fed will pull it off.

  91. Will this be the most heart breaking loss for either player?

  92. Gracie said

I’m listening to a feed with Becker and Henman and someone else doing commentary, which I’m listening to in between tv commericals and such.

    • evie said

yeah, I’m listening to both BBC and US as well. I like the variety.

      • Sergeant said

The multitask ability of women has always amazed me. If I listen to different commentators at the same time I don’t understand either one.

      • Jenny said

lol Sergeant! I’ve only got one option – the BBC! Henman, Becker, and Goodall for stats.

    • grendel said

I notice you have missed out the egregious Andrew Castle, the BBC’s oleaginous pin up boy. Henman’s a bit dull, but decent enough, Becker has a good sense of drama. Goodall is an excellent observer. Andrew Castle, whilst purporting to watch a tennis match, is actually watching the performance of Andrew Castle. You can HEAR his smug smile.

      • Jenny said

lol Grendel, and hello, long time no ’see’. I deliberatey missed Castle out or maybe I just didn’t hear him! Pity McMillan doesn’t work for the Beeb. I thought Fleming might have been in the box, I’m sure he works for the BBC occasionally?

      • grendel said

Jenny – all the Eurosport commentators comment for BBC at Wimbledon except the best, Frew Macmillan. I wish he did. he was on Woman’s Hour the other day, you know, talking about his experience in mixed doubles.

  93. Crunch time NOW. Who will blink first?

  94. Ash said

Can you believe we are replaying last years final? Fed NEVER broke Nadal plus he was downed in the 5th. It’s a recurring nightmare for Fed. This is all too much for me! BTW, I’m a Nadal fan for heavens sake!! Fed is definitely going down and I hate to see this. Mental fortitude (lack of) and all that. At least we can now say it’s not just Nadal..

  95. Raise your hand if you’ve already passed on.

  96. ricke said

    i am dying here!!!!

  97. Federer’s touches to his nose moving up.

  98. Gracie said

    it’s balls-to-the-wall tennis now…

  99. To me, Federer’s looking suspect in rallies now. He is thinking too much about the aces or that Nadal ghost is already here.

  100. Big Fish said

Every time I watch Fed match, it doesn’t look pretty. Every time.. Come on Fed.. Please win it now..

  101. Rick said

I ain’t feelin it with Rog — I’m afraid it’s just a matter of time now. If he hasn’t broken yet, how is he ever gonna do it now?

  102. Jenkins said

Hold on Andy you can do this

  103. Federer’s service games are getting harder and harder to hold now – comparatively – while Roddick’s is getting easier despite the serve getting blocked back and not aced.

  104. Only stroke that can now save Federer: Ace.

  105. Ash said

Guys, look on the bright side – Fed still stands to win the record for the most GS wins in history (he WILL break the Sampras record – eventually) PLUS at the same time he could actually hold the record for the most GS finals lost (now admittedly he has some catching up to do on that one) but we can grasp at straws here can’t we….

  106. Where are those astronaut diapers when you need them? Oh well!!!!

  107. Ash said

    You cannot be serious!!!

  108. Sergeant said

Is Roddick going to win in 7 sets?

  109. Rick said

This is a freakin war of attrition….

  110. banti said

oh my god this is the last game i think

  111. Rick said

Federer leads in almost all stats at this point — including UEs….

  112. Ash said

What does not kill you makes you stronger – and all that…..

  113. avidtennisfan73 said

the aces are saving fed right now, baseline game going down the tubes..

  114. banti said

How is ROger holding serve like this. He always faulters eventually. Not his style to keep winning like this on his serve:(

  115. Ash said

It’s the bl**dy UE’s. I knew it! Look at those ace stats for goodness sake?

  116. Rick said

Ack, this is getting to be like an endless nightmarish Karlovic match without tiebreaks….

  117. avidtennisfan73 said

don’t understand why fed continues to chip back rod’s second serves

  118. Ash said

Why oh why oh why oh why don’t Wimbledon have a 5th set tie-break??????

  119. avidtennisfan73 said

stefanki deserves a raise with/without a win from roddick

  120. Rick said

Decker needs to grow some Mirka balls

  121. avidtennisfan73 said

don’t want to jinx it, but roddick looked a little vulnerable that last game

  122. Rick said

When the comments page gets to more entertaining than that match, we’re all in trouble

  123. Will the winner climb the stands here?

  124. YMD said

    Stats
    Roddick A 27; W 73; DF 4; UE 27
    Fed A 49; W 104; DF 4; UE 38

the shade (like the rain last year) may well be the deciding factor on this one

  127. Rick said

    What’s up with Roddick?

  128. Sergeant said

    YES!!!

  133. Gracie said

My heart is breaking for Andy… But WooooHoooo!

  134. Federer makes history and overcomes the best from Roddick. WOW!!!

  136. YMD said

Awesome Nike commerical with Pete congratulating him.

  137. Bettyjane said

    whew!!!

  138. Stella said

WOW fabulous match. so hard for Andy but what a great achievement for Roger. A classic to be played during rain delays in the future instead of the Mc Enroe Borg tiebreak

  139. August said

    WOW!

  140. Rick said

    Poor Roddick, he’s really crushed.

  141. joao said

What a wonderful guy Roddick is…

    ALL CLASS!!!

Roddick, you won me as a fan today!!

  142. Murph said

I’ve been so emotional I haven’t been able to write since last night. Without watching I’ve been recording & will be able to replay with comfort. I think we now have a true blue real GOAT. Like I even said last night it was a shame to have only one winner. Andy laid out his heart! And bless Roger!

  143. YMD said

    Wow, now what for tennis?

    • joao said

      wonderful question

I guess now we wait to see when will Federer stop winning and who will win in his place…

So sad the image of Roddick in his chair…

      • M said

Andy is still a hero. I think he knows it.
Did you hear his Wimbledon Radio interview after his match with Andy Murray, where he talked about the fact that he and Brooke and Larry weren’t sure whether he could come back at all and then they were like, Well, if we’re going to do it, let’s go full out and leave no doubt.”

        *waves flag for Andy*
        *puts Roger/Rafa hat back on*
*frantically plans and re-plans wardrobe colors for Montreal and USO*

    • M said

Rafa and Roger final next year!

      Andy beats JMDP in 2011.

  144. Rick said

Roddick cannot WAIT to get off the court. But then he has to face the presser, and I think he’s gonna mow down the British press once and for all. Towards the end of that endless last set I thought, why don’t they just call it a tie and give both of the trophies? Because he really dserved the win as much as if not more than Federer.

    • Bjornino said

Well spoken Rick, Andy deserved it more.

      • joao said

        Come on bjornino,

In tennis there is no “deserving” win, no “moral victories”.

Fed won, Andy could have won it. It could just as easily be the other way round.

Federer deserved it more because he won the necessary points to win the match, as specified by the rules of the game…

      • jennifur said

agree w/bjornino + rick. better story if arod won. win seemed anticlimax. like an expected endin.

  145. Bjornino said

Roddick shows total class in defeat… And Federer…I CAN’T believe he PREPARED a #15 on his track suit. And his speech just reeking of arrogance as always. He’s a disgrace.

    • joao said

i Agree with you on the “15″.

I wonder if he would have worn it if he had lost…

      • Rick said

I’m guessing this had to have been a Nike idea. But Federer has final approval over his ridiculous wardrobe gambits, of course, so at a minimum he consented to it. After checking with Anna Wintour first.

      • Deep South Girl said

Of course not. He had two jackets prepared and at the end he knew which one to put on.

Well, I wouldn’t go that far, but he definitely could/should have given more cred to Roddick. When the interviewer set him up with that softball comment about having made the crowd sit through a seemingly endless nailbiter, the natural gracious comeback would have been “Well, you have Andy to thank for that, he played so well he had me up against the ropes a lot of the time, so it wasn’t easy to pull it out.”

      • Bjornino said

Yes, that’s what I meant. He ONLY kept talking about his amazing career bla bla bla. He gives me the creeps, totally. Glad so many here are seeing through it, finally.

    • Anton said

I think he had in his bag just in case he would win it. If he had lost, he surely wouldn’t worn it. Anyways, Federer seemed more dumbstruck to me than arrogant, he just didn’t know what to say.

      • joao said

That is also a good interpretation.

This Flash interviews are way to soon for the players.

    • jennifur said

      agree again. fed so conceited.

    • M said

*sigh* HE didn’t do it. NIKE did it.
Are you going to blame him – and Serena – and JMac – for shooting the commercial as well?

And yes, I know I am a crazy screaming Roger fan. But I still believe in perspetive.

(And the 15 could have been on the front. In fashion, it can always be worse.)

  146. Poor poor Roddick. He deserved to win today… just as much.
I’m a Fed fan but that must’ve been heartbreaking. What a great guy Roddick is, truly humble and funny too.
Feel sorry that they’re running Sampras over the rack now too :)
But, wow, 15 well done Federer. NOW what? :)

  147. Actually, I think next for Fed is that he will want to even up his losing record against Nadal :)
    Good luck Fed.
I agree, the 15 on the jacket is poor form.

    • YMD said

Next year he will have 15 peacocks escort him onto Center Court. He will ride in on a donkey, like Jesus, hopefully without it ending with him on a cross.

i am terribly sorry for roddick.
it was awfully close and i wasn’t really convinced at championship point.
i think roddick did really well.
plus, federer wasn’t really kind towards roddick after the match. no pat on shoulder, not much of a hug, nothing much unlike the treatment he was given by Nadal after he lost AO.

    • Schop said

Yes Zihwye, I think that the ceremony is much much better at the US-Open!!!!
Andy Roddick is a nice guy. And Roger is NOT a cry-baby! He took this win as if it was nothing special! lol. There are more wins to come. A wonderful thing is, that Andy Roddick is back! I wonder how Rafa would perform against Andy Roddick!

  152. Bjornino said

Thank you, Joao and Imaginary. I appreciate that a few more ppl are able to see through Fed’s so called “classiness”. I love tennis, and I love TP’s writing and I read this site everyday. I do NOT like Federer because I think he is a false person. He’s a great player, but he’ll never be my champ. Unfortunately the atmosphere among the comments on this site – being so aggressively pro-Federer and anyone with a differing opinion will be “slaughtered” – leads to a lot of people (friends of mine who love tennis but can’t stand the Federer Gestapo) actually avoiding the site and particulary avoiding to comment. Noone is arguing that Fed is a good tennis player, but please let’s all agree that he’s ONLY a “classy” guy when he wins. I think the #15 crap has proven that beyond any doubt, once and for all. I call upon the Fed-fanatics to respect that people have different opinions. Thank you.

    • Alex said

      actually we ALL see that..
and, no, i’m not a devoted Fedophile

    • joao said

      Still, Bjornino

You would agree with me that this interview is not really the best evidence to find out what the personality of Federer is.

Probably not even the pressers are a good enough forum for that.

      However i will say this.

If you compare the most dominant players in any sport, most of them are not as personable and likable as Federer.

Domination, and the desire it requests, are not really the property of people that are kind in their heart. It takes a certain compulsive spirit. A Certain ruthless spirit.

Federer, like all greats believes in himself. His matches are about himself. His career is about himself. It could not be any different.

      • Rick said

Yeah, after the AO debacle I lost some of my respect for Federer, but I do accept his later explanations that he was just really wound up, and that he cries whether he wins or loses. In his defense, I think it’s still true that the vast majority of the other players like and respect him, so that must say something about his personality as well, as Joao points out.

      • Bjornino said

Well, of course a champion has to focus on himself of herself. BUT: Dominance does not need to = Arrogance.

That’s my point and I repeat: Today Fed showed again, and beyond any doubt that he’s arrogant. I am still in a state of shock abt the #15 thing.. To do sth like that with the world watching.. I mean it’s not like NIKE forced him to do it! And the idea of him hiding it in his bag in case he’d lose (which is of course what he did, he’d never have worn that had he lost) makes me cringe even more.

At any rate I will continue to lurk here and at least post once in a while and help TP out with translations if he posts anything in German/Italian or Swedish, since I actually felt that it was a bit uplifting that someone agreed with me. Before I’ve always felt like the child in “The Emperors New Clothes”….”But…the King is NAKED!” (oh wait, no he’s wearing a butlers uniform with a #15 on it LOL)

      • joao said

I differ with you on the arrogance thing.

I don’t think that Federer is more arrogant than others. Maybe self absorbed, self centered, but not arrogant.

I think he likes the media and the showoff wheelin’ and dealin’ that creates stuff like this years jacket (that i liked) and the “15″, that in essence is no different from most championship teams that have a “we are the champions” T-shirt printed before they know if they will definitely win their event.

That is the nature of the media circus that surrounds sports and that is not all on Federer’s shoulders.

      • Schop said

Bjornino, sorry your most hated player ‘THE dark FEDERER’ (and now definitely the GOAT tennis player) won ‘luckily’ today! Like Rafa last year! lol. yeah! Now Fed has GS #15 and is #1 again: a partir de T O M O R R O W! And let me tell you once more: Fed is not arrogant at all. I know that. lol. If you need some translations into Rafa’s mother tongue I could help you out a little bit. I’m like an homeless orphan who does not speak any language correctly. so sad. a strange mix up. sans papier. huh. btw. many Spaniards are friends of mine. Hope your Rafa comes back again! He’s a very nice guy i.e. like Roddick who got a little bit pissed off after Fed’s comments today! Hey A-Rod you have to bear that, s*cker! Try your best next year! I am not a Fed-fanatic, but why go after his personality when there is so much to admire about his tennis? Jealousy of his achievement?
I don’t like his total dominance in Slams, but I don’t hope, wish, or expect him to resign or retire so that pathetic losers can take any for free. They have to earn, beat Federer.
I hate losers for not being able to beat Federer. I don’t and cannot dislike him for winning. That’s the difference.
We respect your difference of opinion, but going after personality is a cheap shot, dude, because tennis is not a personality contest.

Congrats to Roddick for showing great heart and playing a magnificent tennis ! All the credit to A-Rod for giving us a great Grand Slam final. He had chances to win, just came up a little short at the end. Like I said earlier, A-Rod might have won had he not squandered those 4 set points in the 2nd set.

Regarding Federer’s “classiness”—He brings up Nadal’s absence during the on-court interview, which he absolutely did NOT have to do. And when Johnny Mc interviewed him right after he left Centre Court he used the words “luck” and “craziness” in describing the victory. I’ve never heard any winner say “I absolutely had no business winning this match.” And Rick’s point is very well taken—Nadal’s empathy lingering in Fed’s mind.

As for Roddick—I always thought of him as a punk (based upon crass behavior toward ballboys among other things), until he was defending Fed when the press was getting on him during his troubles last year. With this heartbreaking performance, he’s converted me.

    • banti said

I agree . Fed couldn’t of handled this situation any better. They have a lopsided history and for him to be as sympathetic to Andy as he was says alot. Fed was very gracious to all the greats and has put every great in this game back on the world stage. He has done more for there limelight than anyone can possibly do. The guy is pure class. He handled the entire occasion perfectly in my opinion.

The outfit is just another Nike thing that he will always get ripped on. He has some poor judgement in the clothes department. But I think he’s a man of ritual, he does this everyyear. Blazing the new number on his clothes. Rafa did it with his! Cant hold him on this.

    • Rick said

What Bettyjane said. I hate it when Roddick berates/belittles the umpires as well, but he’s also shown a lot of integrity in other ways the past couple of years.

The whole atmosphere from the final points to the end of the interviews seems a bit….anticlimactic. But what a great match! As for Roger’s perceived “arrogance”…I really don’t see it. Yes, there were opportunities to be more complimentary in the Barker interview, but I thought the remarks he directed toward Andy were very kind and sincere.

It’s difficult to judge sometimes from the little we hear from the players’ own mouths what they are really like. Roger has what I think of as a Germanic pragmatism that rubs some people the wrong way. I personally find Rafa’s on-court comments quite disingenuous, but I have no doubt that he’s a wonderful guy. And then there’s Roddick, and what you see is what you get!

When the players themselves continue to vote for Rog when it comes to sportsmanship…well, that says it all for me.

And really- does anyone really think that the Nike #15 embroidery was Roger’s decision? Not a chance.

    • banti said

So true. As well as you can say it. This is a pure cultural thing. I find Rafa to be disingenous as well!

“When the players themselves continue to vote for Rog when it comes to sportsmanship…well, that says it all for me.

And really- does anyone really think that the Nike #15 embroidery was Roger’s decision? Not a chance.”

Nailed it again. 9/10 players will take Roger over any other recent champion in the sportsmanship department.

I saw it that way too, Clifford. Actually, I thought they were both nice and respectful at the net too. Andy and Roger are not touchy, feely types. Did anyone see that ‘15′ on his top when he first came out onto court because I didn’t, there was no reference to it either. Just like the winner’s name so quickly appearing on the plaque, 3 mins on an embroidery machine could produce the same result.

The stuff about Federer’s arrogance – this is a familiar tale. The disciples of this particular character judgement tend, I note, not to like Federer very much, or even to detest him. Their credibility is thereby just a little strained. I agree with those, including if memory serves Boris Becker, that Federer was a touch shell shocked and not in much of a position to give a considered response. Of course, someone who is accustomed to pouring on the grease wouldn’t have had any difficulty in oozing out the kind of words which would have elicited admiring gasps of “what a classy guy!” and suchlike. Personally, I’m glad Federer is rather more genuine than that.

What a strange match, though. Federer outserves – just about – Roddick, who didn’t do bad. But then, Roddick outplays Fed from the back of the court, consistently, too. There was just no spark from Federer; some of this was no doubt due to Roddick’s excellent play, but it wasn’t just that. Time and again, Federer dumped a ball into the net, or overshot the baseline when under no particular pressure (apart from the pressure of the match as a whole). I thought I detected, in his last interview before the match, a real hunching of the shoulders. Oh-oh, methought, so much for relaxation. Federer WAS relaxed throughout the tournament. He very definitely wasn’t relaxed today. But to the poster who opined how we all know that deep down that Federer isn’t at all tough, th final set showed the exact opposite. Roddick was consistently the better player, but Federer hung on, just refused to yield. I found this particularly extraordinary, because for me, Roddick had “winner” written all over him. I was reminded of Sampras reminiscing on his second, I think, final with Ivanesevic, and having the feeling that this was to be the Croat’s day. It wasn’t to be and this is because Sampras and Federer are above all brutally strong when their kingdoms are under assault. And Roddick is a true warrior, but it wasn’t enough. Thus was Federer winning ugly. It was impressive if not terribly enjoyable.

Whither Roddick? To good things, I imagine, and definitely in with a decent shot next Summer. For even if the Cilics and del Potros improve, as they will, they won’t get to anywhere near the standard Roddick exhibited today. Can Roddick keep that up, or even improve?

With profound apologies to DSG for my customary verbosity.

Roddick was amazingly good, and I’m so happy for Federer who seemed so tense probably impressed by all these goats watching him. Well done, I’m also impatient to see again the unlucky Roddick whom I kind of discovered today.

I did not think that Federer sounded arrogant in the post match interview. Considering English is his THIRD language and he probably had no idea what to say to Andy Roddick, he did rather well. He really didn’t need to say much of anything and the interviewer brought up the #15 on his jacket, not Federer. No one would have known anything about it if it wasn’t for that so… It was a great match and Andy should be able to regroup and come back in the US Open. Go Federer!

  173. Sol said

Great day for tennis, Roger made history and Andy proved he’s WAY more than just a serve. Weird match, like Grendel said. But I think we don’t talk enough about the pressure Roger had to deal with. No 15, Wimbledon, no1 spot, all that while the tennis legends are sitting in the Royal Box watching you and Pete making the trip especially for the occasion. And yet, despite the nerve-wrecking situation of having huge serves thrown at him whenever he manages to get a point on Roddick’s serve, he continues to fight in this endless 5th set and he doesn’t crumble. Who can honestly tell me Roger doesn’t deserve this? I’m not taking anything away from Roddick but Roddick was the underdog, nothing to lose, playing freely and going for his shots. Roger, was not. And he had EVERYTHING to lose. The pressure was huge and he found a way to deal with it.

As for the arrogance issue, if it were anyone else except for the regular Fed-haters who had that opinion, maybe I’d give it more credibility. If, say, Jenny thought Roger was arrogant, I’d consider the issue, but it’s always the same haters so get over it, and bring something new to the table. That whole debate about his speech and how he didn’t give credit to Andy is BS and you’re just looking for anything to feed your hatred. He hugged Andy at the net and said a few words to him. And then said Andy played “unbelievable” (I remember that word cause he repeated it a few times in his speech and I thought he was really still in shock). And when Andy got a standing ovation, Roger got up from his seat and applauded him along with the crowd. So stop spreading your hatred around and maybe then we’ll have a more open discussion. Roger has annoyed me in the past with some of his comments. But today, nothing in his attitude or words were arrogant. Get over it. That’s all I can tell you.

    • evie said

Sol, I agree. Fed was actually way-way more subdued in this victory than any other in recent memory. Even after his 5-set win against Rafa in 2007, he was giddy. And think about his wins after USO and RG. He definitely knew the pain Andy was feeling and kept it much more low-key than normal.

And he was hugely complimentary to Andy. Even told JMac in an interview that he got a bit luckier in the end.

I was worried that some phrase might go off in his overwhelmed moments, but nothing did. He was gracious, as was Andy.

This win is much less fun for me, however, than I even expected. I’m thrilled Andy made it to the final, but I can’t think of anyone I want like to see Fed beat less than Roddick. Did it have to be Roddick, again?

    • I agree with you guys, wish Fed had beaten someone else. I like Roddick, he seems a really genuine, nice, humble, hard working fighter and funny to boot and my heart goes our to him. He was emotionally crushed, not at all surprising.

Because to me anyway, Roddick looked the better player throughout, I thought Federer looked flat and played quite tamely at times, and it was obviously the massive pressure and nerves (which he dealt with well when you think about it), but I thought Roddick was really superb and truly deserved the win as much as Fed. I really hope he wins some more Majors and I reckon he might just give everyone a run at the US Open, including Fed, Nadal, Murray, Del Potro, Tsonga, if he plays like he just did. Imagine facing all THOSE guys in row on a hard court, sheesh.

Just, Roddick – don’t give up because of this one! He did very well against Nadal in Indian Well this year, too – felt Roddick was the better player on the day there – Nadal really only just pipped him to the post.

Federer served 22 aces in the last set, amazing, totally saved his ass.

Also, I’ve noticed from comments further up that Fed was given the number 15 jacket thing after the match apparently – that changes things a bit.

Well I’ve nattered too long. I think there’s a lot of different opinions on this site, which is part of what makes it such a great site. Best tennis blog in the world in fact :) Long live TP!

Sol san, I agree with your words. I really am happy for the winner but feel so much for the loser. They both played so well.

    • Rick said

Hey Sol, I am so not a Fed-hater — the exact opposite, in fact. I was just a little disappointed that he didn’t say more about what a great match Andy played — in many ways, a better match than Federer played, as many have pointed out on here (though I think the comments here and in Roddick’s presser about Roger’s mental toughness should also be given their due). But I also think it’s true that he was in shell shock at the time of the on-court intereview. Here’s what he had to say about Andy in the presser, which made me feel a lot better:

      Q. How hard was that compared to other finals you’ve played here?

ROGER FEDERER: It was difficult, because I thought Andy played great. You know, I mean, I’m obviously ‑‑ I know how it is to play a Wimbledon final. I know how it is to play a fifth set in the final, in a Wimbledon final.

But it felt different. It was so different to what I experienced the last few years with Rafa, you know, where it was a baseline game. Today it was a serve and return game, which is more classical for grass.

You know, I mean, it’s frustrating at times because I couldn’t break Andy till the very, very end. So satisfaction is maybe bigger this time around to come through, because I couldn’t control the match at all.

      Q. What went through your head when you finally won the second set?

ROGER FEDERER: Yeah, I mean, I thought the second set was obviously key to what came after. Maybe being down two sets to love, the way Andy was serving, would have always been a very difficult situation to be in, you know.

Even then down two sets to love it’s still possible, but it definitely increased my chances of winning.

      Q. What are your feelings for Andy now?

ROGER FEDERER: It’s hard. Sports or tennis is cruel sometimes. We know it. I went through some five‑setters in Grand Slam finals, too and ended up losing. It’s hard, you know.

But I think he did great, you know. He’s not going to let his head hang down. I think he’s gonna come back strong and play great in the States. I think it’s one of the best matches we played against each other. Of course, conditions were very quick today.

But he played well. You know, I really thought I had to play my very, very best to come through.

I think it will too. Do you think that baby would have the temerity *not* to show up on King Roger’s birthday?

How have I missed this jewel who is Rick Reilly?? First the German anthem as background music for Murray Tribute, now ballerina shoes and a LETTER to Federer’s CHILD??? You’re going to give ESPN a cheesier name than it already has.

      Good Grief!!

      • Deep South Girl said

Sorry, YMD, I thought Reilly said that FEderer’s moves made ballerinas want to burn their shoes!! Ha-ha. Oh, Wait!! DID he say that about Federer?? If so, disregard, please

Who was I kidding! soon as I sat in front of that TV I was going for Federer.Oh Boy! Till 4am I watched the match. Didn’t wan to get my eyes off the TV. Andy must be kicking him self over that 2nd set. When Federer was missing easy put aways,I kept saying to my self- OK who ever plays like a champion will be the champion.Roddick looked like the winner didn’t he!He played like a champion. To me they both are Champions. After 5 sets and 10/10, I think they should stop the match and declare them both as champions. This is cruel.

I was also up until 4am. I started at 10.35pm and didn’t take my eyes of the screen until 4am :]

I’m very happy right now, although, I can’t help feeling for Andy, he looked quite upset :[

yo, i reckon federer did a good job and he is the best player of all time. I did want roddick to win but i wanted federer to get 15 slams. i ended up watching the 1 and second sets and then sleeping through the third and fourth and all of fifth until the last game.

Whoa! … 295 posts? Are you kidding me?! That’s gotta be a record, and TP, does the 300th poster win a free trip to Vegas? hehe. This match thread is a great idea (and long overdue) and it appears the unmoderated posts are a smashing success (no pun intended ;) ). Unfortunately, I wasn’t able to participate “live” as I was on vacation, but it’s on my DVR and I can’t wait to see it :)

Just a couple quick notes before I hit the hay …

CONGRATULATIONS ROGER! It sounds like you won in an EPIC, BATTLE ROYALE and to have won 15 slams in only six years? That’s just SICK and almost unimaginable, inconceivable. And if someone would have told me after Pete retired that his 14 would be eclipsed within 20 YEARS, I would have laughed him or her out of the room.

MR. ANDREW STEPHEN RODDICK … 14-16 in the fifth set?? Wow. That had to be an HEROIC effort on your part but regrettably, a painfully bitter pill to swallow as well :( . Keep the faith, keep Stefanki, and your name might be written on the trophy next year.

And I did fast forward to the award ceremony and interviews and how cool was it seeing Laver, Borg, Sampras, and Fed all together? That’s a snapshot for the ages! (And Johnny, great questions for the legends!). And why some people are acccusing Fed of being arrogant I have no idea. I thought he said all the right things, was dignified (not “The Crying One” this time), humble, thankful and even the “15″ on his jacket didn’t bother me — it was very discreet and it was Sue Barker who brought it up, not him.

    Good nite all.

      “MR. ANDREW STEPHEN RODDICK”…

Wow MIKE_, what, no more A-Who? Roddick must have done something right yesterday to get THAT kind of respect from you ;)

      • MIKE__ said

Lol. But as I told Ricke, “Mr. Andrew Stephen Roddick” is temporary pending further results.

    • Jenny said

Good one, Mike! I wondered where you were, good holiday? Enjoy the match.

      • MIKE__ said

Hi Jenny, do you have any video links of the British interviews of Laver, Borg, and Sampras at Wimbledon? Thanks to NBC (Nothing But Crap), Mac only had about three minutes with the legends … argghh!!

      • Jenny said

I’ll check Mike, it would be on the BBC site, but I have a feeing they can only been seen by UK viewers if they are available.

The key stat in my view –
Fed was asked the one factor that led to his wimbledon loss in 2008 and he said that his serve deserted him in the 5th set but his ground strokes kept him going…and this year what happens..his serve saves him in the deciding set BIG TIME.

DSG, I so wish I could have been alive enough to answer this when it came in last night and I was so thrilled to get it, instead of having to wait until after Chieko’s bad news (I’ve been swamped with email).

Chieko, my condolence post to you has a link in it, but again, so sorry for your loss.

DSG, I’ve missed you and the crew more than I can say. Won’t bore you with the story now, but looking forward to being around more consistently for the rest of this season.

I don’t know about the rest of you, but what do you all say to a nice *dull* rest of the season? Roger and Rafa take turns winning, Marat changes his mind about retiring … I think I’ve had about all the excitement I can take.

    YAAAAAAY TP!!!!

    YAAAAAAY ROGER!!!!

    YAAAAAAY A-ROD!!!!

    BRING BACK RAFA!!!

(Andy can win in 2011. JCF and *grudglingly* Lleyton — and Roger — have shown him the way.)

    *wipes tears, waves flags*

After over an hour of reading a couple of other tennis blogs, I am so happy that Tennisplanet is here! Intelligent and humourous posts and commentary by passionate (and compassionate) people make this blog a joy to visit. The posts and comments on other sites are so filled with bitterness, it’s hard to imagine some of those people really enjoying ANY tennis match.
Keep up the good work, TP and everyone else- it’s always a wonderful read!

Thank you for all the comments. I had to look up the meanings of a few words like rope a dope, LMAO etc. I have been learning a lot ,

My best friend died suddenly just before the final started. She was only 2o years old. I have to thank Federer san for winning for that made everything easier. But I do really feel for Roddick san. Loss is really hard to take. But I know he will be fine again. Like I will be fine again. Thank you again.
