Whose win will make the most waves at the upcoming US Open?

Posted by tennisplanet on July 13, 2009

Federer:

-No. 16.

-Third straight US Open. OK, sixth. Geeeeezzzzzzzzz!!!!!!!!!

-First Slam as mother father.

-Shot at non calendar Slam.

-Beating Nadal in the finals will validate last two Slams / No. 1 rank.

Nadal:

-No. 7 thereby passing the ‘irrelevant’ greats stuck at No. 6.

-Beating Federer in the finals will suck the thunder from Federer’s RG / Wimbledon titles and No. 1 rank.

-Career Slam.

-Will be able to retreat to his clay den without regret / getting hounded by media.

-Will have found the ‘open’ secret of winning the USO every year: Rest?

Murray:

-First Slam.

-Beating Federer in the finals will resurrect the ‘what if’ ghost from Wimbledon.

-Get him within striking distance to No. 2.

Djokovic:

-Get that ‘one Slam wonder’ label which many have come to believe in with some conviction off.

-Hold off Del Potro from pushing him further down the totem pole.

It’s way too early to make predictions but I’m liking the Andies’s chances (Murray and Roddick). Nadal even making it to the final?? Lol, that’s just crazy talk!!

Mike, are you coming over to the dark side? Welcome to the Roddick fan club! Anyone else?

      • MIKE__ said

The Dark Side? I’m not sold yet, lol. The Andies love the hard-courts and Fed’s spring, hard-court woes lead me to believe that Murdick might take New York.

Crazier things have happened. Yes, the Andies are determined to go all the way. Murray, in particular, must really want to somehow make up for those “My Time Has Come” headlines from the British press at the start of Wimbledon. Better yet, he should avoid reading the print until after the tournaments. He let’s it go to his head. His oncourt behavior gives it away (bicep flexing, etc.)

6 straight is happening! Will that mean I win the time capsule thingy? I think I’m tied for the lead there no? We need a list of contenders put out! :) I predicted nadal’s health will slip. Sorry but I did.

      Banti and others
Look at #10 on “Time Capsule”

I predicted: (see #10 on “Time Capsule”

      #1 – Federer – because he will win 3 of 4 GS’s
Roland Garros – Federer – I even predicted Nadal would be injured!!!
      Wimbledon – Federer

I was wrong about Federer winning AO but I did predict Murray will win US Open.
But if Federer does win USO – I did mention that Federer would have 16GS’s at year end and no. 1!

Has anyone else checked their predictions?

      • banti said

claire, it will be interesting to see how TP calculates the talley. If FEd wins teh open I think the people who picked him to win all 4 are all tied for the win. Not sure.

      Banti!!!
wasn’t it you who said – and it was before the Madrid-final – that Fed was gonna win Madrid, FO, Wimby and be the new/old number 1 again, after that??!!

someone did though, i remember that i was thinking: “what a strange kind of prediction…”

do you have the crystal ball or something??
      ;-)

    • joao said

Actually the “Time Capsule” prize is already beyond everyone.

No one predicted the Nadal win in Australia and Federer in Paris.

      • pommesdesuisse said

        i’m sorry Joao…
but someone did, i remember. on this site. i just can’t remember anymore who it was…
        Banti?

      • joao said

I went to see all the predictions after the Nadal Soderling game and no one had the combination of Nadal in the Australian and Federer in the French.

      • pommesdesuisse said

        cheers joao…
        i don’t know nothing ’bout AO…
the “prediction” or whatever it was ;-) was just before the Madrid-final…:”Fed will win Madrid, FO, Wimby and take over the Nr.1-rank again”…
which implies that Nadal had to get out very early or not even take part at FO/Wimby…
but you know…not so important. just thought it’s remarkable…

Mike – right on!! That’s just crazy talk!!

Banti – I hope and pray you are right. I’m a believer in 6 straight too!!! Do we dare to even dream it?

“-Beating Nadal in the finals will validate last two Slams / No. 1 rank.”

A bit sick of this type of comment as it really is BS. Nadal WAS at Roland Garros and WAS NOT GOOD ENOUGH to make the final. This DOES NOT invalidate Roger’s result. Roger WAS GOOD ENOUGH to make it to another final. Rafa WASN’T. End of story.

Wimbledon – Rafa has dodgy knees and couldn’t play. No guarantee that he would be in the final even if he did play. No point to speculate as he WASN’T there because he cannot maintain his fitness. How should this invalidate Roger’s win? A load of bollocks.

So when Rafa plays the US Open and loses before the finals (as with RG), and if Roger wins it, will this again invalidate Roger’s win? You may as well apply this BS argument to all the finals that Roger won when not playing Rafa. If Rafa is NOT GOOD ENOUGH to make the finals and be as consistent as Roger, why bash Roger being good enough to win? Don’t see you making the argument that Pete’s slam wins were diminished by not playing Andre in a final, even when Andre lost early in the tournament.

Please be a bit more fair, rather than myopic…

    NADAL’S

first slam as a mother…you’re cruel man! (keep it up)

    oh, and forget Djokovic!
    he’s not getting past one

  8. Somebody Else said

James Blake winning it. Could you imagine???

    • Sarah said

That would be so cool. James is having a hard time right now – he has dropped out of the top ten. What a story if he could win the USO? :) But I believe Andy (Roddick) has a better chance.

There’s a lot at stake for all the top guys this year, for the reasons you mention here as well as for the general jockeying for ranking points. The top order can change with every tournament. Each one – including Roddick – could make some waves here in Sept. And there’s always the possibility someone else could surprise us, like Soderling at RG. It’s pretty interesting right now. I hate to push the summer along, but I can hardly wait!
