‘Next guy’ scenario?

Posted by tennisplanet on July 14, 2009

I mean the next tennis great.

He will dominate his nemesis, win the FO, career Slam and works, but will fall short of Federer’s Slam number, throwing the GOAT debate into another tailspin.

Of course, he cannot have the calendar Slam to tilt everything.

Or are we about to have an altogether new era: Neither open nor shut? – to accommodate the freaks looming large – to throw off everything?

    Do you think this person is currently playing or just coming up in the ranks?
    There is a seven-year gap between GOATs.

    “dominate his nemesis”

    if he dominates his nemesis, then his nemesis isn’t his nemesis, is he??

      Very well put, pomme’ :) , but…

      … Superman dominates Lex Luthor;
      … Batman dominates the Joker;

      but they are their nemesis.

        well…
        then maybe Fed is Nadal’s nemesis, no? ;-)
        but ok, i can see your point. i guess you’re right…

    With Fed and Nadal being around for several years, it will be hard for any of the current players to get into the mix. Maybe the next GOAT will be the young fellow that Lundgren is coaching now…I can’t remember his name!

    I look forward to seeing what Grigor Dimitrov will have to offer in the next decade. With a one-handed backhand, he should be a real joy to watch (provided he puts in the hard work to develop a great game).
    I’m also interested in seeing what becomes of Ricardas Berankis in the next decade as well.

      Donald Young might get things going for himself in a few years.
      I read that he’s 6-ft. tall. He always seemed about 5′6″ to me because he never wears his cap straight and wears shirts that look too big.
      He’s won the juniors’ Australian Open and Wimbledon.
      There’s no telling, really.

        What is Donald Young’s story? I remember something about him bouncing back and forth between juniors and senior tours.
        It would be great to see an American in the mix.

        What about Jesse Levine with his great Wimbledon showing?

        He has been recently playing the challenger circuit (since late 2008).
        He will turn 20 next week.

      There’s still time for Andy Murray to get there.

      I’m not familar with Berankis, I’ll watch out for him. I noted he’s just under 5′8″ which isn’t the best advantage against the big, tall power boys in today’s game, I personally like to see some of the smaller guys making waves, so good luck to him. I see he lives in Bradenton, has he been down to Nick’s place yet?!

        True. He’s shorter than I realized. His coach is a fellow Lithuanian, I believe, but no sign of any Bollettieri connection. He’s a 2007 U.S. Open juniors’ champ, but then again, Gael Monfils won 3 out of 4 junior Slam titles in 2004 and has made only 1 professional semifinal since. I guess one can’t rely on junior championship results. Federer ONLY won a junior Wimbledon title. Edberg won all 4 in the same year, a Junior Calendar Slam for him.

        I’m really more excited about future one-handed backhand players.
        They’re generally the “GOAT” contenders down the line, go figure! (Laver, Sampras, Federer)

    the truth is that no one knows the future.

    But, presently, the youngest guy in the Top 100 is Nishikory, who’s 19 yrs. old.
