Is Delpo carrying the virus strain of streakiness?
Posted by tennisplanet on October 7, 2009
While this isolated incident of bombing out in the first round right after winning your first Slam AFTER eliminating Nadal and Federer back to back may not be a great pointer to anything, Delpo’s style of play and the precedent(s) it has established may have more to the ‘streaky’ doubt some may have about his game today.
The closest clone to Delpo has to be a combination of Blake and Tsonga. All three possess the flattest of shots on the game today making it the ‘highest’ risk play of all. When it’s clicking the game robs opponents of time throwing them out of their rhythm / comfort zone.
Granted Delpo has that extra height to allow for that special clearance at the net for these bullets to look good, but the precise timing needed to execute these shots on a consistent basis make the style of play ‘flowery’.
Remember the more fancy your game is, the shorter life span it will produce. Nadal?
Delpo doesn’t appear to be as headstrong and stubborn as Blake and is certainly not riddled with a garden variety of injuries handcuffing Tsonga. Besides, he has a boat load of time – comparatively – to add variety and sizzle to his game to escape the foregone predicament based on track record.
The stark contrast to the first set Delpo played against Federer to the rest of the match substantiates that claim on Delpo’s current form and level of play. Sure, there were nerves and all that BS but despite that it’s the classic scenario of what ‘go for broke’ show can look like when you give it that long view over say five years.
Nevertheless, just by winning his first Slam at 20 – against Federer and Nadal to boot, Delpo has positioned himself beautifully in line to be counted amongst the greats of the game. His steady rise before getting here further cements his ‘real’ stature on the tour.
But that’s just finding a nail in your quest to build a house. Many have gotten there in the past only to get lost in the crowd of also-rans, Djokovic being the most recent.
Add the very real possibility of that ‘streaky’ strain to infect cripplingly and Delpo has some serious work cut out for him – most of it maybe off the court though.
