Will Kooyong produce the early season leader with momentum?

Posted by tennisplanet on January 10, 2010

With Federer, Nadal and Murray unable to secure any clean separation among the top five as the first Slam of the year approaches, will Djokovic and Delpo slide in to fill the void at AAMI classic.

The field there is far stronger than what Federer and Nadal faced at Abu Dhabi and Doha or what Murray had at the Hopman Cup. Here’s the list:

Djokovic.

Delpo.

Soderling.

Tsonga.

Verdasco.

Gonzalez.

Haas.

Each and every one of them can potentially reach the semis at the AO turning the event into a perfect set up for the first Slam of the year.

Doubles and WTA on the chopping block?

Posted by tennisplanet on January 10, 2010

With more and more activities, novelties, internet, video games etc. vying for attention today, people will one day reach a point, if they haven’t already, where only a selective number of sports will make them look up.

Already WNBA is on the verge of extinction. You can blame the economy only so much before reality sets in.

Heck, even NBA is forced to constantly evolve to just keep up. And that’s with megastars already on the screen today.

With tennis not being picked up as sport of choice by the current generation at any alarming rate, any offshoot(s) like doubles and WTA are bound to feel the heat sooner than later.

Bryan brothers, Serena and now Clijsters / Justine combo appears to be the last line of defenders holding the line. And the reason they are there is even more pathetic: No one is willing and able to carry the baton any further.

After Sharapova develops crow feet, that part of the deal doesn’t seem to be looking up too much either.

Does that mean more events featuring both mens and womens players like the Slams, Indian Wells etc. so they can force it down our throat – by default? Since you are already there and there are no mens matches on show, the fan is more likely to watch above two groups instead of listening to live music at the café.

Or can it get so bad one day that the expensive, nearly melting ice cream will appear a better use of time?

Why Doha loss should sting Nadal real hard.

Posted by tennisplanet on January 10, 2010

Reached the finals fooling around with clowns not even worthy of the tomato can label, with Youzhny the only hurdle removed.

Davydenko took care of Karlovic, Federer and Nadal – back to back to back – two in straight sets – one after ‘stomaching’ a bagel in the opening freaking set / down two match points.

AO is not likely to feature so many non-tomato can stars in the line up pointing to 2+2=4.

Did that Soderling win at Abu Dhabi provide a false sense of ‘being back’? Or the certainty of a W, given Davydenko’s opponents and expending of energy, the bagel etc. evoke complacency?

Maybe it’s not a good idea to bagel the guy with his adoring wife in attendance. It could wake him up. Slip in a set or two to not stir anything.

Did this loss take away the juice from the Soderling win to bring Nadal back to the starting block, if not beyond?

The loss also gave Federer the satisfaction of losing to the eventual winner, the feeling he was robbed of at Abu Dhabi, allowing him to pull even after the Soderling loss put him in the red.

Bottom line: Nadal movement this year will be predicated on who falters where and why, more than any of his own doing.
