Djokovic’s Dubai title: Boost or bust?
Posted by tennisplanet on March 1, 2010
Guy had to painfully plough through three back to back three setters from quarterfinals and beyond against Ljubicic, Baghdatis and Youzhny.
And that’s when Murray, Cilic, Federer, Delpo and Nadal were not there.
But will successfully defending a title for the first time in his career carry enough juice to overlook the obvious? OK, he did win two of those matches after losing the first set. Does that count?
Conversely not winning the title would have been even worse under the conditions. So lesser of the evil BS then?
Or was this all a reflection of him being spent after having a successful end of last season when everybody else was done?
Nevertheless, this may be one of those rare occasions when winning a title may not move the needle much, if at all. With new racket, coach addition, fierce attempt to make the hair look normal etc. water under the bridge, this may fall into the ‘not ready’ slot unless proven otherwise – against the big dogs.
Maybe he needs to rethink the ‘parent banishment’ clause again to drive stronger wind into his sails. Either that or he may have to adopt ‘default’ as his middle name.
