    Thanks for the pics, TP.

Was Nadal in Eurodisney? It’s a nice change from the usual pics with the Eiffel Tower in the background.

    Grass “season” is so refreshing.

How can someone “reload their batteries” the day after slam no 7 and hit the practice courts in London? That’s mindboggling.
    What is Mauresmo doing there?

Mindboggling indeed! At least not too far to travel.

I see Rafa wasted no time announcing “Excuse me, number one coming through.” ;)
Bjornino, would Rafa’s new ranking be by default as you considered Fed’s last year? or do they both count because they were there to make their finals and win them?

      Mauresmo needs to work out.

As far as I know Federer played at the French Open this year. Nadal did not play Wimbledon or Queens last year and lost 2500 points in the process and thus gave away the #1 to Fed. So no, I don’t consider Nadal’s #1 a default just as I wouldn’t consider Federer’s #1 a default if he plays and wins everything from now with Nadal in the draw. Although I must say Federer deserves credit for actually beating Delpo at the French Open last year. That’s the only match he “should” have lost during FO/Wimby 2009 which he managed to get through, and that shows he’s a champ. Wimbledon without Nadal was a foregone conclusion. Roddick could never have won that. I am sure he’d have lost vs Fed even if he hadn’t made the choke-GOAT-backhand-miss in the 2nd set tiebreak. Same thing goes for Haas. I actually LOL:ed when Haas missed those shots which would have given him the match. It was so obvious it was gonna happen.

Yeah I remember the Haas match. He became visibly unwound after that third set.
Did it go to 5 sets because Haas was doing so well in the beginning, or do you think, like many do, that Rafa’s loss suddenly put pressure on Federer to consider “Whoa, this is on me now!” ?

Let’s take another look at this Bjornino.

Firstly, I agree Rafa should be #1 for he is, on current form, the best player in the world. And he is # 1 by some distance. Yet, if Roger had not had such a miserable few months, the points would have said otherwise. In fact, even with all the poor performances since the AO, if he had simply done what he’s done the last 23 times in a row (i.e., reached the semis of a slam) Rafa would still have been #2. So, give Rafa his #1 — it is well deserved — but note that it required a terrible few months from Roger (none of which Rafa contributed to for they never met) for Rafa to become #1.

Second, the bit about Roger becoming #1 by default because Rafa was injured is simply wrong. First, there is difference between an injury to a professional athlete from bad luck (got hit by a truck, or to take a real example, Monica Seles) and an inherent fragility in the body that got exposed while he has doing his job. In Rafa’s case, his knees broke down not because of some external force but because of an inherent problem with his knees that was exacerbated by his style of play. In short, no luck involved here — he couldn’t stay fit so he missed tournaments and other gained. In fact, just I say Roger deserved to lose the #1 rank this year given how he’s been playing, I’d say Rafa deserved to lose his rank for he couldn’t maintain his fitness.

That said, you don’t even need to go into his injury to realize that Roger would most likely have gone to #1 even if Rafa hadn’t missed Queens and Wimbledon. Before the FO, Roger was at 10030 points and Rafa was at 6880, a gap of 3150 points. Let’s say Rafa played and won Queens (debatable but I’ll let it go) — it’s actually 250 points, the gap goes to 2900. Now assume Rafa won Wimbledon (very very debatable and I’ll get to it). he’d gain 2000 points and Roger would lose 800. Roger would still have been AHEAD by 100 points and would have been the #1 player in the world entering the FO this year. After all, besides W and Queens, Rafa played everything else he’d normally have played. As to whether Rafa would have won Wimbledon last year — I don’t know, but his results before Wimbledon (straight sets loss to Roger at Madrid and FO 4th round loss to Sod) and results following Wimbledon, where he won nothing for 9 odd more months, would suggest otherwise, but you don’t even need to speculate. Give him Queens and W, Roger is still #1.

Rafa deserves to be #1 today for he’s clearly the best player in the world right now. But you’re being unfair to Roger. He deserved to be #1 too even if Rafa had played (and won) Queens and Wimbledon. No defaults with Roger’s #1 either.

Rafa looks so happy and relaxed. And I am so happy for him.

Lately, the French Open seems to have the effect of taking the weight off of the winner’s shoulders.

Obviously, that happened last year for Roger, and he went on to win Wimbledon.

It’s so funny in tennis as in life. A little extra confidence goes a long way.

Hey TP, Rafa is wearing a cap backwards in the first two photos? Are you going to tear some strips off him like you did a few weeks back with a photo of Roger whilst he was practicing? Thought not.

As for Rafa being with energy to practice a day after winning a slam, perhaps if we go by TPs analysis, he played tomato cans for 6 of his 7 matches, so his tank should be with a fair bit of petrol ;-)
