Shaq, Kobe vs Federer, Sampras.

Posted by tennisplanet on July 21, 2010

With a career spanning 18 years, Shaq has earned – just a salary – of $290 million. Federer: $56 million over 12 years. Sampras: $43 million over 14 years.

Shaq earned Federer’s salary (12 years) in about 3 1/2 years. Sampras’s: (14 years) 2 1/2 years.

And Shaq is not even close to being the GOAT of basketball. Kobe gets there in two years.

    Your point?

Why not throw in some teacher’s salary too? And then lament about how they are doing such great things for such a pittance. Or maybe a plumbers’? How long is Shaq going to let a clogged toilet stay clogged?

Do you want this to be Cuba where a doctor is paid $25/month and looks to janitor work or weekend cabbing to make ends meet?

Fact is, if the men who paid these salaries didn’t feel Kobe was putting them in the seats, then they wouldn’t pay them. In what passes as a free market here, only a few hundred men can make it to the NBA, out of a world wide pool of billions-they make what the market bears whereas becoming a teacher is relatively easy.

Further, it’s a freaking distraction from the real and ominous problems that our country faces. Tennis gets several hours a day and it’s a blessed break when my mind is on nothing more then hitting tennis balls.

Oh look, I can see November from my front porch!

You make an important point—it doesn’t speak well for our country but that’s the way free enterprise is. I wish we valued teachers as much as we value our sports figures but the sad and obvious truth is, we don’t.

It makes smart business sense to pay shaq that kind of money given his bankable star status. His team owners will be earning a fair bit more than that, I assure you.

Unlike in tennis, the teams in the NBA are owner-driven revenue generators. Paying guys like Shaq that kind of annual salary is also a capital investment for the owners. Look at the financial impact these guys have. For example, Miami Heat signed up LeBron James recently to team up with their other two superstars Dwayne Wade and Chris Bosh. In tennis terms, that is like having Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal and Djokovic / Murray on the same side playing team tennis against the rest of the top 100.Imagine the impact it would have in the world of tennis.

The official announcement had an immediate impact on businesses in Miami; from driving tourism to that city from other states to new food fads, fashion and lifestyle. What else is going up? TV viewership and ratings? Anything else? There’s already a mad scramble for tickets and a huge waiting list for season’s tickets…just about everyone who has money to spend is trying to get a piece of the action as sponsors or customers.

By the way, the owner of Miami Heat, Micky Arison is on the list of Forbes top 100 Billionaires. The breakdown of his net worth ( around US $ 6 billion), I am guessing, is probably 3/4 from incomes and revenues earned by his companies, franschises and other investments. Miami Heat is just another sound business decision for him. This guy could buy and sell Shaq several times and some; just for kicks.

Do we have anyone like this in Tennis? Perhaps yes, but not as sole owners of a grand slam or a team event. It would make business sense to invest in tennis, but it also makes much better sense to invest in the NBA given the disparity in stakes between the two sports.

    Wow! I’ve written a lot more than I expected to. That’s enough : )

This is very depressing to me.

      What have we become?

Look at what we value. Watch the video Tee gave us the other day “Food, Inc”

Look at the Gulf of Mexico. An sea is dying and we still want more…
