What’s Nadal lacking on hard courts?

Posted by tennisplanet on August 21, 2010

Flatter shots? Why? Because 95% of the time players are able to reach his shots rather comfortably. Nadal is now firmly imprisoned in his clay cage with that loopy forehand his second nature depriving him the ability to capitalize on an opening. The trade-off called the top spin is far too old to have any meaningful impact specially amongst the top players who are now virtually immune to it – if not loving it.

Aces? Sure. But that’s a horse already dead from years of thrashing.

Bottom line: The two tournaments Nadal has played in his pursuit of a career Slam provide no clues to any significant improvements / adjustments he has made to realize that dream. In fact, both are stark reminders of Nadal being stuck at a point called ‘standstill’. Nadal, in the innermost recesses of his heart, is wanting to win on hard courts without having to relinquish the comfort of his current game. He is unwilling to leave first base to steal second.

I think his movement on hard may be the bigger issue, he may want to try out all kinds of shoes to see if he can somehow feel more like on clay and grass.

so all the talk of overtaking fed’s 16 slam record is, perhaps, a bit premature at this time?

May be not wear those shoes that are one size smaller as recommended by his Uncle, but wear shoes his own size for that is more normal really.

You are so freaking funny TP. Wait till the clay court season starts again and TP will post that Rafa’s top spin shots are still a nightmare for the top players, no? lol.

I heard Agassi wore some special shoes, when he won at RG, to overcome the clay. What were those, something like soccer shoes, to my recollection.

Well, he has won an Aussie and multiple ATP hardcourt titles…I am sure he will take all of the other titles, 2 Wimbledon, 1 Aussie, 5 Frenchs over 1 stinking USO anyday..He’s lacking NOTHING!!
