I think the Fed/Joker match is going to be fascinating. It seems like all you have to do is give Djokovic ONE ball that he can hit into the corner and he can get you running corner to corner forever… I have NEVER seen anyone better at that. And then I watch Fed/Soderling… and how Fed can come off of defense with a miracle shot and get back on offense… totally blew me away. Fascinating. Who will exert their will????

Rafa played 3 more hours, same number of sets. He’s so freaking slow! Those extra 10-15 seconds at the line for every first and second serve add up.

I thought I would enjoy a Rafa-Roger final, but now I’m not sure I’ll handle the hype. It’ll be off-the-charts. Still, since there is no way Rafa is losing to Misha, the Dream Final is what I’m pulling for. And wow, would I love to see Roger win it. To me, it would probably be second only to his RG win in sweetness.

You’re right about the hype. It comes from the commentators and not from Roger or Rafa, but it’s irritating just the same.
What are the other players? Chopped liver? Cannon fodder?

Both Roger and Rafa are great players and deserve to be 1 and 2, but having played tennis for a lot of years, I understand that any player can beat any other on any given day. To hype up a final this way is counterproductive and unprofessional. I wish they’d just shut up and let the balls and calls fall where they may.

Me? Being the Contrarian that I am am hoping for a Youzhney – Djokovic final just to hear the commentators sputter their way through explaining just how it didn’t happen.

        I agree.

LOL I can be a little that way myself! 😈 Too much hype does my head in, I’m sorry, but it irritates me. Our pundits are still trying to figure out how Murray lost to Wawrinka, thank goodness that’s easing off now!

My dream final would have been Fed/Nalby, but not to be.

Hey hype is good and how can anyone think of anything other than a Fed-Nadal final, common people! 😀

      • Jenny said

LOL Kitty – I know, love both Fed and Nadal, I’m sure I’m in the minority here, but have never been a Fedal fan. Respect to Fedal fans 🙂 Hey, I like a change sometimes.

      • Kitty said

R u serious Jenny? not a fan of Fedal?

      • BANTI said

She’s sick of the same players fighting for the biggest prizes in the sport year after year. She’s looking for a storybook win from an underachieving talent, a fresh new talent on the tour, or just one of many players she fancies . Can’t blame her. If she had to pick she’s be picking Roger for the final! Hope I got that right Jenny:)

      • Jenny said

LOL Banti – Spot on!! 😆 Sorry Kitty.

    • Vr said

Totally agree and pray for that outcome

As I was stunned by Roger’s numbers I went to check other stats:

    Nadal after 5 matches
    Winning % on 1st Serve: 85.2%
    Winning % on 2nd Serve: 66.4%

    Federer after 5 matches
    Winning % on 1st Serve: 82.2%
    Winning % on 2nd Serve: 58.4%

No matter how impressive the 74 aces and the +50 look Nadal is has had the same effectiveness than Rodge!!!

    • wuiches said

sorry, I made an unforced error

“No matter how impressive the 74 aces and the +50 look Nadal is has had the same effectiveness than Rodge!!!”

      • Jenny said

Those serving the most aces don’t always go on to win the match or John Isner would be in the final. The important thing is placement.

        LOL ‘unforced error’

    • BANTI said

Most important stat. First serve percentage. If this stays above 60% for Roger he wins. If it does not like Aus09 Rafa wins. The match is in Roger’s hands to win or lose, not Rafa’s.

      • wuiches said

anyway numbers are just that, numbers, my heart is with Rafa but this time I think he won’t get it

Rodge has been playing amazing and this is his favorite surface and Rafa’s worst, just hope to see a great match at least, even if Fed wins!!!! we’ll find out on sunday

        good luck Spaniard!!!!!!

      • Haya said

Spot on.. I remember that he played better than nadal with a 30% first serve percentage.. well, until that 5th freaking set 😦

  6. BANTI said

. So you think Roger’s about the only one who has the game to beat Rafa right now?

FERNANDO VERDASCO: Well, Novak is a player that also on fast surface like this one, he already beat Rafa many times, and he have also the game to beat Rafa. But, I don’t know. I think if I need to bet here, I will bet for Roger. I think that he won five times here and he like these conditions.

  7. Somebody Else said

Wow, no love for Youzhny anywhere? He can put up a good fight against Rafa. I’m curious.

    • BANTI said

SE Youzhny is another player with a winning record against Rafa on the hard courts but not looking great for him overall. He just doesn’t have the consistency to beat Rafa at the moment. Of those who made the round of 16 in Rafa’s side, he was always the one with the best shot in my opinion.

      • Somebody Else said

“but not looking great for him overall. He just doesn’t have the consistency to beat Rafa at the moment.”

—this has been my suspicion as well going into the semifinal.

    • Jenny said

Love Youzhny’s tennis, always have done. He seems to be coming out of his slump this year. I don’t think he will beat Rafa, but I do think he has the game to trouble him and he has beaten him on hardcourts before. As Banti says, inconsistency. Can he hang tough for 5 sets if he has to?

      • Somebody Else said

Rafa is in a very good position. I favor him at the moment, but I simply cannot rule out a Youzhny assault.
