Nadal secures year-end No. 1 rank.

Posted by tennisplanet on September 16, 2010

Other interesting notes on it:

Nadal, Federer and Ivan Lendl are the only players to have held, lost and regained the year-end No. 1 spot in the 37-year history of the rankings. Federer did it last year.

Since the rankings began in 1973, only eight other players have finished the year at the top more than once. Of those nine, Nadal, John McEnroe and Jimmy Connors are the only left-handers.

Since April, Nadal has won 43 of his 46 matches.

“It has been an incredible season—one of my best ever, if not the best,” Nadal said Thursday in a statement. “I worked very hard to get back to the top and it feels really good to know I will end the year as No. 1.”

And very well deserved by Nadal… The question now is will Nadal maintain the number 1 in 2011? Providing no knee problems, improved serve and added super confidence, i find it difficult for Fed or Nole to move up the ladder.. Unless Nole will really make a break thru next year, it’s highly likely that he will end up as a one slam wonder in my book..
My only disappointment in general would be i don’t see any new players knocking the on the door of the top 5.. Top 4 will be pretty much maintained by Nadal, Djoko, Fed and Murray.. Del Potro hype has already kind of faded away… Any other upcoming players coming up? Please advise!!!

My Congratulations to Rafa! Well deserved 🙂

It’s a shame Delpo had to drop rank because of injury, [now #34], it’s rotten luck, it happens to so many that way [injury] over the years, eg Haas, Gonzo, Nalby, Juan Carlos. It happened to Rafa in 2009, when Roger went back to #1. I’m sure once Delpo gets back on track and fully fit, he can get his ranking back. Ironic, D-Nal lost his spot to Delpo as the Argentine #1 because of long term injury and from this week D-Nal has taken it back due to Delpo’s injury, he’s now ranked #28.

That is interesting, Jenny. I hope one day (soon!) both those magnificent gentlemen will both be fit at the same time.

I’ve been thinking about this a lot, all season.
