May I know what that BYE really means in that draw context?

In various sports in which the contestants are drawn in pairs, the position or turn of one left with no opponent in consequence of an odd number being engaged; as, to draw a bye in a round of a tennis tournament.

Manal, I was curious too and this is what I found from Dictionary dot net.

Cheers, Jett. That would make an automatic entry to the 2nd round given that they are not playing anyone then eh? hmm wondered why they allow such thing….

Manal, As you can see, in Shanghai the first 8 seeds get first round byes, it’s more of a perk really. There are no first round byes in Slams, although the top ATP ranked 32 are seeded.
