Hi TP – would it be possible to have a permanent Casualty Watch on the Top Bar? All the tours can be under one thread. I’ll do my best to keep it alive, I’m sure others will too. What do you think?

    NEW YORK — American teenager Melanie Oudin has upset No. 4-seeded Elena Dementieva in the second round of the U.S. Open.

    The 70th-ranked Oudin, of Marietta, Ga., came back to stun Dementieva 5-7, 6-4, 6-3 Thursday in Arthur Ashe Stadium.
    Dementieva was the 2004 runner-up at the U.S. Open and French Open and won the singles gold medal at the Beijing Olympics last year.

    The 17-year-old Oudin, meanwhile, never had won a U.S. Open match until this week. She never had won a Grand Slam match until reaching the fourth round at Wimbledon this year.

    Now Oudin will face three-time major champion Maria Sharapova or another U.S. teenager, Christina McHale, in the third round.

    Top-seeded Dinara Safina, meanwhile, survived a second upset bid in as many matches at the Open, overcoming 15 double-faults to pull off another comeback victory over a low-ranked opponent.

    Beset by shaky nerves and poor play, Safina managed to hold on to beat 67th-ranked Kristina Barrois of Germany 6-7 (5), 6-2, 6-3 Thursday in the second round.

    That came after Safina barely avoided becoming the first No. 1-seeded woman to lose in the U.S. Open’s first round. She had 11 double-faults and 48 unforced errors in that match, a three-set win over 167th-ranked Olivia Rogowska.

    Safina needed more than two hours to get through each match so far.

    Tennis player Querrey hurts arm in freak accident
    (AP) – 15 hours ago

    NEW YORK — Sam Querrey cut his right forearm in a freak accident after practicing for the Thailand Open in Bangkok and will be out at least four to six weeks, the U.S. Tennis Association says.

    USTA spokesman Tim Curry says the 21-year-old Querrey sat on a glass table after practice Monday and fell through, hurting his arm. The injury required emergency surgery.

    A right-hander from Thousand Oaks, Calif., Querrey is No. 25 in the ATP rankings.

    Japan Open.
    The world No3 still has problems with his left wrist, which he aggravated during Great Britain’s Davis Cup defeat against Poland last month.

    World No1 Roger Federer had already withdrawn from the $1.3million tournament after telling organisers he needed a rest following a physically-demanding year.

    A statement on Murray’s official website said: “Andy is disappointed not to be competing in Japan.

    “But on the basis of medical advice, he has decided to give his left wrist further time to recover.

    “His injury is improving on a daily basis and Andy is very close to resuming full training. The wrist will be assessed again this weekend.”

    Murray, 22, is expected to return to action at the Shaghai Masters.

    Andy Murray has pulled out of Shanghai with continuing wrist problems. He thinks he may have tendinitis. He hasn’t overplayed with so many tournaments as others with this problem, so maybe he’s over-training.

      Andy’s always been a hard worker; I think he’s working too hard.

    Sad news, as just said by our comms. Ferru has had to withdraw. We’re not sure what the problem is, it was a left hamstring yesterday. He won’t play in Paris either apparently, such a rotten shame, the horrible, cruel side of tennis. I’m relieved he’s being sensible by preventing serious damage to himself, and because we don’t want to see him carried off the court mid match.

    Now Tipsy is taking a med time out, looks like his leg too. He looks okay now, moving fine, so I’m not sure. This is Verdasco’s match to lose. ATP are you watching all what’s been going on, this is ridulous – ADDRESS THIS ISSUE NOW and stop burying your heads in the sand, cut back on mandatory tournaments, or whatever it takes.

        He was running and the ankle just gave way and rolled over, big tendon strain by the look of it which can be worse. He did get it strapped, he tried to play on, but it was hopeless. He’s now changed to Joma clothing from Lotto, not an auspicious start.

        Yep, Feli’s with Joma. It could have been the shoes, thank goodness he’s not a heavy guy and go down with a thump, actually I don’t think he dropped. I know David wears Lotto, but I’ve never been keen on some of their designs.

      Were you ever able to find those player/match statistics you were looking for?

      I had found a PDF file on the ATP website, called “top 200 matchfacts”, but it only covers performance since the beginning of this year. 2009 lists such as ace leaders ‘09, break-point leaders ‘09, first serve pctg. leaders ‘09, etc. are nowhere to be found on the site. I used their search bar, even looking up Greg Sharko statistics, and found nothing. Other means are in order.

    Oh dear, it’s only 14th Jan and 8? are ailing already, this is terrible. We know Nalby and Mathieu won’t be in Australia, and JC could be questionable given that roll, I’m surprised he didn’t break his ankle. Delpo and Soderling have had problems with those areas before.         Söderling. Also known as the Swedish team… In Stockholm. But yeah, David is the Argentine team. He has always made DC his priority for as long as I can remember. Which is why it would seem so strange if he pulled out as well. Apart from that, it could very well lead to Argentina not competing in the World Group next year. And David doesn’t have that many years left (he says) to fulfill his DC dream.

        No stream. Or at least, I can’t find anything.
        And while David and Ferru are having fun on the beach, I’ve been busy with other things, different versions of the Copa Telmex draw that have appeared and a somewhat uncertain stream situation for the tournament…
        But I’m just glad that David didn’t draw Ferru for his comeback match. He’s in Ferru’s half but who knows if that’s going to matter.

        Thanks for checking, Joolz. Nothing on Ferru’s site either. Sometimes the streams for tourneys appear on the day, so we shouldn’t give up hope for next week. Surely there must be one. No, not the best scenario to meet Ferru straight off. Crazy situation for me as I’ll be rooting for both of them, I wish they were on opposite sides.

        Well, I think the Copa Telmex was shown on the betting sites last year, so that gives me hope.
        And in order to meet Ferru, David would have to reach semis… A very long way to go.

        Yeah, I could do with a bit of sunshine, heat and beach right now… And a bit of David and Ferru. Well, right now I’d be happy enough if David can actually play his comeback match, this time around. I’ve grown so used to him, not being there, not playing… And me, not suffering through one of his matches. It’ll be quite a challenge to report his match(es) now.
        And as long as they don’t play against each other, I’ll be rooting for Ferru. 🙂

        There are a couple of photos of David and Ferru from Saturday. One of them (and a link to the rest) can be found in the latest post on my blog. Apparently, the whole thing was more about the two of them, playing with disabled children, with the money that was made going to David’s foundation.

I heard it was for charity and I know Ferru works with Downs children.

        David’s foundation is for the integration of disabled children. He was able to spend more time on it, during his injury pause.

        His comeback match will take place at 7.30pm local tonight. First match of the night session. I was expecting them to put him in the night session. And it’s good for him but not so good for me… But well, I’ll find a way of watching it. And then be a complete wreck, tomorrow.

        According to what I’ve just read, Murray isn’t injured, in which case withdrawal would be justified. He’s chosen not to play DC in March too. it’s his choice of course. Why withdraw from Marselle? He’s played the least amount of tennis over months, along with the two R’s [in their case very understandable] than anybody! You can’t just rely on talent alone to get you through, Andy, you’re not good enough yet, success is also down to hard work on the courts too.

        Francois Caujolie, the tournament director is very unhappy about Murray withdrawal. He said Murray did that to him last year too. He said, he asked me for a wild card to play doubles, asked me for 5 hotel rooms, gave them to him and he does that to me. Murray is going to lose some fans in France. This is a very unhappy director.

        I think you can guess how I felt about the whole affair before this article came out yesterday, Monique. I tried to downplay my own thoughts in previous comments here. There have been similar occasions of his cavalier attitude in the past and why I won’t support him, because for me tennis is also about commitment, effort, going the extra mile, responsibility to tournaments signed on for, and fans who have spent good money, time and travel expecting him to play. I know other players with genuine injuries who have had to present themselves to the tourney doctor if they can’t play or fined if deemed fit to do so. Therefore I totally sympathise and support the French Director, it isn’t on, it reflects badly on us as a sporting nation. A ban is extreme, but a hefty fine would be appropriate imo, he’s also lost a rank position and Rafa’s back to three and correct order restored.

        Here is the latest audio interview with Francois Caujolle, tournament director in Marseille. He does not want Andy suspended, he’s calmed down from a previous report in the Daily Express, and now merely pointing out a player’s responsibility to a tournament, which I think is reasonable under the circumstances.

        M, I believe Roger cited fatigue when he withdrew from Paris in 2005, he’d been on a tear year. It was the end of the season, [October] most players were knackered or injured and it was also the year when many players withdrew for various reasons. Pioline was furious at the time, and I believe that was the year Berdych won the title.

        It happenned during his second round match with Dani Gimeno Traver, I saw him wincing on occasion, he called the trainer who strapped his thigh. He insisted he was okay to continue and he went on to win the match. The amazing talent is still there, but his body has let him down again. As you say, M – horrible.

        I think his heart wanted to play DC, all those years of commitment. The decision appears to have been taken out of his hands now. The last thing I wanted was an injury to decide it, but I’m glad he isn’t playing. They do have some strong players, Monaco, Zeballos, Chucho [if fit] Ker for doubs. Calleri has just retired.

        I got the info re David’s actual injury from the ATP site.

      Michael Llodra has just retired after losing the second set 6-7 to Tsonga, he fought all the way, but he looked exhausted and aching right from the off. No surprise, he played two matches in one day on Sunday and then had to travel to Dubai. IMHO This is a case when a player has to protect themselves from the possibility of real injury, sensible decision, at least he tried, he could have withdrawn from the tourney with every justification.

        I’ve just read some nonsense posted on another site, ie Michael Llodra walked off the court and unsportsmanlike behaviour mentioned. UNTRUE, I watched the match. At the end of the second set, Jo Willy went for a toilet break. During this time Michael started to pack his bags, he then spoke to the umpire and walked to the net to await Jo Willy’s return, he then shook Jo-Willy’s hand, the umpire then announced his retirement, that is FACT.

        To be absolutely correct, my mistake, Llodra didn’t talk to the umpire while he was packing, he spoke to the tour supervisor, Gerry Armstrong, who was sitting courtside. Unfortunately, it’s incorrect stuff posted elsewhere that gives a player a bad name.

        Of course I do. Everyone’s entitled to express their opinion, we all accept that, but to accuse a player of unsportsmanlike behaviour without fact is not on. LOL M, it was a good job I was watching!

        I’m sure it was stiff joints, he was flexing his legs a lot, jet lag and exhaustion, as you say. The British comms said he looked exhausted, they certainly weren’t judging him. The supervisor didn’t look displeased either.

        Wouldn’t you just. It isn’t just the tour but the travelling too, folk tend to forget that, air travel can be very draining. Marseille to Dubai is a long way and in some cases players are expected to compete within 2 days! The boys from Valencia didn’t have so far to travel.

        Really, Jenny? She’s retired?! Geez. It’s hard to see the attraction to Stepanek, IMO. It really makes you wonder what kind of terrific personality that guy must have. Or maybe all those funky snake moves he makes when he wins a good point tell us there’s a lot more there than meets the eye. lol.

        As for Ana, I always wondered if she’d just be a flash in the pan. But it’s hard to watch a Grand Slam champion lose her way like that. I think she has to decide if she wants to be a pin up calendar girl or a dedicated athlete. Either way, she’ll make a good living, no doubt.

        You know, it’s so strange to me. As much as I love the boys, does it seem to anyone else to always be the ladies that have to make the choices Jenny and Gracie outline?

        I mean, as many fashion covers as Roger has done*, shirtless sports covers Rafa has done*, underwear shoots Fer and Carlos have done*, they don’t seem to have to struggle with these things.

        Yet Masha, and Ana, and Anna Kournikova before either of them …

        I just wonder — what’s different?

    Good point, M. Firstly, I think Ana has lost confidence for whatever reason. She probably needs a sabbatical. IMHO, all the great women players past and present think like men, have an inner steel core, fiercely ambitious, can compartmentalise, and yet still remain feminine at the same time, I’d place Maria in that category, she’s injured.

    Gracie, I’ve heard Radek in a personal interview which was posted here some years ago, and he’s charming.

      M, I don’t think think women necessarily HAVE to make the choices between these worlds, but I do think some of them get wrapped up in that whirlwind and are, perhaps, too easily distracted. All these fashion shoots take time and energy, which at the moment, Ana might better put to better use working on her game.

        Rafa and Roger have done shoots for Vogue. I’ve been peripherally involved in such things (“Why not those ones?” she wails. “Why not thoooooooooose ones?”) and they do take a lot of time, and a lot of prep.

        And those are just the examples I can think of off the top of my head. I can’t imagine how long Fer’s Calvin Klein shoot took (more’s the pity :-)) but I know how long it takes to get the lighting, and the makeup, and the angles, and you have to have umpteen meetings to talk over the concept …

        And yet, it doesn’t seem to phase these guys (even Rafa’s drama-llama New York Mag shoot) and (some of) the girls just … crumble. (I mean, examples of not crumbling – Venus, Serena, Jelena.)

    At last, Rafa has seen the light. A most sensible decision to skip Barcelona, he really doesn’t need to play that tournament. He’s won MC and had his massive boost of confidence, it’s time no3 to rest up them knees until Rome. After that, skip Madrid, it’s way too risky at this stage imo. By the time we get to the French, he’d be rested and primed enough to go on a rampage, without doubting his knees every two seconds.

    A difficult move for Rafa, but ultimately this a decison that will most likely pay rich dividends for him.

      Rafa wouldn’t choose to miss Barcelona, he regards it as his ‘home’ tourney and is important to him, neither would he want to disappoint the Spanish fans or sponsors, or Albert Costa the Director. He’s obviously feeling some discomfort and following medical advice which is of course sensible.

        Here is a translated version from Marca,

        IMHO, from what I read from this, Rafa was feeling something, my question is why would a fit player who was having no problems withdraw from a tourney at the last minute, and choose not to defend his points?         Rafa said in his interview in Marca that the Barcelona tournament wasn’t important just when the first/second/third/fourth-ranked player in the world was there, but that the tournament is important and historic in itself.

        Which I thought was very true (and savvy to remind everyone).

        I hope Tommy is better soon. News reports said it was his lower back, so I’m really hoping it’s not serious.

    It’s been raining in Rome. It was a virtual washout last year. Terrible scheduling for some players due to the inclement weather, like waiting all day in the locker room and then called out late at night and then having to go back in again after a short while. Fena, David, Monaco and Djoko were the real victims of that debacle. Those matches should have been cancelled hours earlier.

        I know the organisers have no control over the weather, it’s tough, but they do have control over good sense and fairness. It’s not right to expect players to wait around all day and then drag them out in the evening when the weather isn’t settled, they played under lights before the rain came again, like half an hour into play before it was officially cancelled! 😈 Other matches were cancelled and the players went back to their hotel. I’m hoping the players involved had plenty to say about it, I was on the verge of a hard rant to Rome myself 👿

        Fena has said on his site, his withdrawal is due to a knee problem.

        Without question! The last few years it’s been sketchy at the USO, as you know; we waited hours for Rafa and Feña to finish only to have to return an alternate day for the last set, which of course mucked up the rest of the schedule … and who can forget the “semi-final stampede” of 2008?

        No. If concerned fans don’t say anything, nothing changes, because if the players protest, they are dismissed as prima donnas.

        It’s par for the course to wait around even possibly a little over times for scheduled matches, but we’re talking many hours, and then having to play on an empty stomach, they can’t even comfort eat or they would have problems!     The former world number one hurt her left foot in the tie against Estonia and could be out for up to six weeks, according to Belgian tennis officials.
    The French Open begins at Roland Garros in Paris on 23 May.
    Clijsters’ fitness trainer Sam Verslegers said: “Roland-Garros? Kim might be fit in time but we won’t be taking any risks.”

    Clijsters injured sesamoid bones in her left big toe in her 6-4 6-2 win over Maret Ani on Saturday.
    The 26-year-old returned to the WTA Tour last August after a two-and-a-half year break from tennis during which she married and started a family.
    Her return reaped immediate rewards as she added a second US Open title to the one she won in 2005.
    Earlier this month she thrashed Venus Williams in the Sony Ericsson Open final in Miami and is currently 11th in the world rankings.

        It is sad in such a young player, I’m very sorry. Unfortunately, he seems to have had problems with his wrist for ages, even when he was playing. Doctors will only resort to surgery if conservative treatment fails, not a good situation for him, the healing process will take time, and that’s before he can start practicing.

        Just learned it’s his shoulder, M. He can’t possibly compete if there’s a problem in that area. I honestly didn’t think it was the blister unless it had become infected, it did look sore at the time, but not inflamed. Makes you wonder if he was feeling twinges in his last match, he didn’t call the trainer if he was feeling something, but shoulder probs will affect serve too.

        Absolutely. And feeling twinges at the time, but not the full impact of the injury till later, I think, occurs far more frequently than we hear about — especially if he was practicing at all between tournaments.

        Agreed, I do think this happens far more frequently than we hear about. David would never retire or withdraw from a tourney unless he was having real physical problems and couldn’t compete competitively and neither should any of them risk serious injury and be sidelined for weeks on end.

        The problem is, the lower ranked players feel the need to keep up, maintain their points and improve their rankings or get back to where they were, possibly in the top ten like David was. These guys don’t have the luxury of a safety cushion. Even with a cushion, rank points can disappear so quickly too. Look at how many points Rafa lost last year and Roger this year. Delpo and Gonzo have dropped ranking because they haven’t been able to play and Nalby’s outside the top 100!

        Blisters are one thing, but shoulder, knee, wrist, hip injuries are always a worry in a tennis player. They must heed the warning signs, get treatment/rest to prevent a serious issue developing in the future.

        I know he’s one of the more senior men on the tour, so I guess we should expect more, and more frequent, injuries in addition to slower healing times.

        And in a way, I guess it makes sense, as much as these things can make sense, like David’s hamstring trouble after the hip. When you’re tending to a joint, the muscles around it are vulnerable, it’s easy to favor — and then overuse — the muscles on the other side …

        But it’s so hard.

        I try to think positively because so many of the football (American) and basketball athletes here go through so many surgeries in the course of the career, and so many seem to do okay afterward …
        (I hope that doesn’t mean I’m just becoming de-sensitized to it. I don’t think so.
        I certainly hope not, anyway.)

        Well, we know he will receive the best care, Jenny — and I’m sure he knows we root for him to recover ASAP. And we know our top boys will do their best to get back to us as fast as possible.
        Please try, if you can, not to be *too* depressed …

        Absolutely! I always feel a little sad and nostalgic when I see these great players in the autumn of their career having to endure surgery and for many it’s an unfortunate end to a successful career. Their mind, desire and talent is still there, it’s their bodies that let them down. Eg, Guga, Coria, Haas, Kiefer, Moya. As you know Juanqui lost a lot of time and tournaments with that debilitating adult chicken pox virus which really dragged him down, he looked positively frail when he reappeared after. I guess he’ll still be overseeing proceedings with David in Valencia, but I bet he’d rather be playing.
