If the B sample proves positive – All I can say is, what a stupid boy! What a waste, so much talent going down the toilet.

Noooo! God, I hope that isn’t true. Sad, sad, sad.

OK, I just read the article and see it’s cocaine. That is much less damaging, in my mind, than a steroid-type drug. I honestly don’t understand why drugs like coke are banned anyway. They do not help performance and what he does on his own time should be his own business.
Of course, since he knows the rules, he shouldn’t have risked it. But the rules are unnecessary and unfair.

“drugs like coke” are ILLEGAL. Many people feel
they shouldn’t be, but they currently are.
So, given that reality , if the ATP stopped banning them,
it would be tantamount to the ATP declaring
“We really don’t mind at all if users of ILLEGAL drugs
hold up our trophies at the end of tournaments.”
[ long pause to consider the public relations back-lash ]
Nope….I think they gotta keep banning ’em.

I agree ban the drugs but this 4 year thing is ridiculous. To take someone as talented as Gasquet out of tennis for effectively the rest of his career is a punishment for not just him, but his fans and tennis as a whole. This rule needs to change. They need to give him a 6 month suspension at the most for recreational drug use.

I agree with Gary. I mean, where will it stop, a fuzzy haze of weed in the locker room?!

Just to add, I find it incredibly sad too. One can’t tolerate drug taking in a professional athlete, but I hope the powers that be will be lenient for a first offence, so in many ways I go along with Banti.

Shoplifting is illegal. It’s not going to get you kick off the tour.

We accept that Evie, but knowingly committing an illegal offence while employed can cause you to lose your job permanently. I love Richard and his tennis, btw.

perhaps Gasquet has glaucoma…

Well…..if God made it there must be a reason for it.

Sorry, Evie I completeley disagree!
There are three factors which are determinant:
1: Talent
2: Physics
3: Mental strength
Nr.2 ie can be improved by using steroids…, Nr.3 ie by taking coke. Nr.1 is the most important factor (the baseline)
Check out TP’s last post: “Another proof why the success on court is not physical” So coke could play a very important role in Tennis and cycling (recent example Tom Bonen).
Why do you think poeple are getting older and older and why sport records are broken almost weekly? Because of CHEMISTRY! 😉

Come on Schop,
Everyone knows that “chemistry” is important in building success in team sports!!
Oh, wait, you were talking about a different “chemistry”… 🙂

I don’t think Gasquet’s a bad kid as such, just rather silly and he’s now paying the price for a wrong decision.
