Nalbandian getting grilled by countrymen for Davis Cup defeat.

Posted by tennisplanet on November 25, 2008

Rumors about him quitting the Argentinian team are ruffling his feathers. It’s just a subtle way of the country getting their frustration out on the player required to demonstrate his leadership by imposing his will on the rubber to win the first Davis Cup title for the country.

There are many instances in every sport where the home team has found itself in similar predicament only for the leader to rise from the ashes to deny the visitors the glory of success. This is when legends are born.

Had Del Potro continued without any injuries, Argentina would probably have won the title, but then no one really would have been the hero. Heroes and legends are not born out of calm waters. You have to earn the right of passage through the ball of fire.

This was clearly Nalbandian’s opportunity to shine and more than compensate for his lacklustre ‘best player never to win a major’ performance on the tour. Great players have jurisdiction not only on their own showing, they are great because they have the ability to make every one else on the team to fall in line with their goal and objective. Heard of Michael Jordan?

This is just another blow to an under achieving career Nalbandian has had. Only this time he has disappointed his entire country. Comments like the following are not going to soothen the wound:

“For me, it’s really an honour to represent my country,” he told reporters. “I’m going to continue defending these colours in the best way possible.”

“For me, playing the Davis Cup is the best and I’m upset that people have doubted me.”

feel bad about the defeat,” said world No. 11 Nalbandian. “They were tough, tense moments we went through.

“I had just as much faith with Rafael or without him. When he didn’t come, everyone thought our chances had improved, but it didn’t work out that way.”

“This was our worst defeat. We had a sinister weekend.”

“We’ve played in two Davis Cup finals in the last three years and I still think we can win it.”

Is Obama a Kwame Brown or LeBron James?

Posted by tennisplanet on November 25, 2008

For people just dragging their carcasses from under that rock, both these players received tremendous hype even before they stepped on the basketball court.

Kwame was hand picked by none other than Michael Jordan to be the next big thing in the league.

LeBron was picked by Nike even before he graduated from high school.

They couldn’t have been anymore apart from each other in terms of performance on the court. Could they have fared better or worse respectively without that pressure and hype? Maybe.

You see, pressure works differently on different people. While it may have handcuffed Kwame from playing his natural game, the very same thing may have motivated LeBron to play out of his freaking mind to be considered a legend already.

Obama is not too far from this scenario. Add the turmoil around the world from economy to war and the pressure may be bursting on the seams. Ideal scenario for birth of a bust or a supreme leader.

Can Obama stand up to the challenge or the pressure is just enough to impede any meaningful progress?
