Insults and expletives lace Spain’s Davis Cup title.

Posted by tennisplanet on November 26, 2008

Verdasco and Spanish Davis Cup captain Emilio Sanchez criticized the Argentine crowd for shouting insults and expletives at the Spanish team during Saturday’s doubles match.

“When they express themselves in a manner which lacks respect, they lose all the credibility they had gained until now,” said Sanchez.”This is a sporting event and the winner is decided by what happens on the court.”

Verdasco said the crowd’s behaviour pumped him up. “It gave me more motivation… I played better after they started insulting me.”

I remember this incident, despite it being somewhat of a blur now. I couldn’t hear what was said it was so noisy, but it was obviously something offensive to ruffle Ferni’s feathers. As I recall, it all started with a Verdasco point which Nalby contested. Nalby and Mancini marched to the umpire’s chair where an animated discussion with Pascal Maria ensued. Sanchez was then called over. While all this was going on, the crowd became heated. Feli assumed the leader role and successfully defused the situation with the Spanish fans, he got them singing Ar-gen-tina! My admiration is growing for this guy, an absolute gent and diplomat. Ferni was called over and it was agreed he replay the point which he accepted without question, he then delivered an ace to seal it. To his credit, Mancini appealed for calm too, and both captains shook hands. While all the shaking of the hands was going on, David was scowling, scheming and looking his Machiavellian best at the back of the court, those fixed baby blues made an iceberg look like a slush pool. His face was a picture! Fernando with his soft browns and hurt Spanish pride was quietly preening his peacock feathers, puffing out his chest, and strutting as only Ferni can. Don’t get me wrong, I like him very much, he’s a sweet guy underneath all of that, I can well understand Ana falling for his charm.

I’m delighted it motivated Ferni, I don’t like decent players insulted on the court for no reason by a few rude fans. lol maybe he needs a few more ‘insults’ to get him going. The Spanish Tennis Federation had very high hopes for the nervy Ferni years ago, backed up by our pundits who also saw his talent, he needs to live up to those expectations now, and try not allow those nerves to block his progress anymore.

lol It could have been worse, Ferni could have ended up ducking from a well aimed raw Pampas steak which would have done even more damage to his pride and coiffured look. David could have ended fighting with a pair of Rafa’s Bridget Jones’ knickers wrapped around his head! What a spectacle that could have been in the Islas Malvinas Colosseum.
