US Open attempting to ‘buy’ Wimbledon’s hallowed status?

Posted by tennisplanet on July 8, 2010

Hasn’t the prize money now gone up practically every freaking year since the whole of past decade or so? Isn’t that tactic usually reserved for when you are trying to attract top players to your event? So if you are a Slam and that’s taken out, shouldn’t these increases be more to just keep pace monetarily with other Slams to stay afloat? But if you are making massive waves year after year leaving all other Slams way behind the curve, shouldn’t there be a very strong motive driving that truck? Or are the turkey necks deciding to share the added wealth huge attendance etc. is generating progressively?

Next up probably is a show of even stronger star power to supplement the cash push. Should we then expect ‘A’ listers showing up at ALL US Open matches? Shouldn’t hurt, don’t you think? After all, who wouldn’t agree to rate US Open ahead of Wimbledon if following routinely appear in the stands: Paris Hilton, Lindsey Lohan, O J Simpson, Mel Gibson, Tiger Woods, Jesse James………..?

If nothing else, it should make the ‘road trip’ tournaments leading to the big event fiercely competitive for the massive windfall when matched with US Open title. Didn’t Clijsters win what $2 million when she won the title?

I don’t think the US Open is trying to buy Wimbledon ‘hallowed status.’ There merely giving the players a bigger share of the pie/profits.
