What the top four have reason to smile about so far @ US Open?

Posted by tennisplanet on September 1, 2010

Nadal:

Berdych is out? Potential semifinal opponent. Even though he was a clear thorn in Nadal’s path to the title here, Berdych may have actually helped Nadal by providing a tougher resistance to Murray in the quarters thereby utilizing some of the fuel from Murray’s tank. Berdych was on course to meet Murray in quarters. So unless Murray goes out early too, it could prove to be just half of the strike Nadal wanted.

However, if Murray goes away too, Nadal’s biggest threat then could be Ferrer / Nalbandian in quarters – with a manageable Federer or Djokovic in the final.

Federer:

Soderling, Federer’s potential quarterfinal opponent, has already played his first five setter in the opening freaking round against some tomato can, with Cilic still to come before he faces Federer. That spent energy has to amount to something against the ‘hardly sweats’ Federer if they do meet.

Melzer, Federer’s 4th round opponent, has played a five setter too. Not enough? Hewitt, predicted to face Federer in the third round did the same with a slight difference. He is out of the freaking tournament. Hand the trophy to Federer already?

Djokovic:

Baghdatis is out? But all that and more may already be erased with these two following happenings: Djokovic first match was a close five setter and Azarenka was floored – partly due to heat.

Murray:

Berdych, quarterfinal prospect is out.

Subtle ‘out of plain sight’ fashion statement in players’ box @ US Open.

Posted by tennisplanet on September 1, 2010

When usually these two are spotted wearing footwear covering their entire feet, since the US Open started, both have switched to flip-flops allowing larger skin exposure. Whether it’s the heat prompting such a drastic move or some other motive, is still not clear.

And who are these two people? Have a clue? No, you don’t!!!!!!!

Mirka and Annacone.

Interesting article about Alexandr Dolgopolov. From Jenny. Thanks.

JENNY

A nice and interesting article by Peter Bodo about Alexandr Dolgopolov and his match with David Ferrer, which typically wasn’t on a televised court. It was good to read his match report, livescores are not the ideal way to follow a match.

Dolgo is flashy and talented, refreshing, absolutely no question. David isn’t over flashy, [although he does ‘dance’ when he isn’t prowling the baseline] doesn’t have a big serve, or get easy points, but he is talented with his own special deadly weapons. Imho, any player of 5’9″ and 160lbs has to be talented to survive in today’s tennis world dominated by the tall and treetop big power servers/bangers and is still able to beat many of them. Like eg Hewitt, Davydenko, Clement, they find other skillful ways to win including sheer guts, that all amounts to talent and it adds to the rich tapestry of tennis.
